Instructions - Soft Top on Backdraft Needed
I need SOME kind of guidance or instructions on how to install the soft top "kit" on my Backdraft. It's like an erector set and camping tent all in one package, with absolutely NO hint on how or where to start.
On suggestion was to take it to an upholstery shop. Well, maybe.
It finally got cold in CA and I really would like to see if this thing is worth it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You are best to assemble on the ground, the center main hoop then the hoop with the hinge goes to the back towards window.
Don't forget to run the hoops through the cloth strap in center, they are supports.
Once it is together you will need a friend to help put on the car , one person on either side. Be sure to put a thick cloth on the area around the door and fender to avoids any scratches.
It goes on fairly easily and is functional although the inside of the car does get stuffy.
I would suggest putting some weathersrtripping or 3m tape on the rear as it will scuff the paint as it flutters going down the highway.
I found this out the first time I used it,however I was able to buff them out and now I have weatherstripping on the top back there.

You mean install or simply put it up?

Cashburn - I need any full install help. The thing is still in the bags, hardware in plastic bag. It looks like the side windows even need to be "cut" out, some edges are raw and looks like an pro upholster is needed. Maybe I'm wrong, just not sure.
Thanks for the other reply as well. I'm going to do the 3M plastic, like I put on the front, where it contacts the body, if I can figure out where that is likely to be.
Any more help would be greatly appreciated.

I've installed about 30 of these, and given the option I would still farm it out. It takes about 1.5 days with the dry time on the glue.
Did your kit come with the ferrules for the new style install?

OK, 1.5 days for the glue to dry tells me I need someone other than me to prep this thing! Last time I used glue I had to throw my clothes away....once I peeled them off.
To bad, the car looks like it's ready to accept the top, all of the hardware is installed and looks great, including the little velcro strips under the door edge inside....always wondered what those were for.
Thanks for the insight.

You need to do things like pull the windshield to mount the hook for the center hold down. Also have to drill and tap windshield frame to mount the hooks for the hold downs of the top header bow.
Did you get the kit with the ferrules?

Actually, nothing. I had some great guys send pictures and info, including pretty detailed instructions, but I just never got around to making a decision on how to proceed. Some day.....

Soft top questions..
I am planning to have a soft top installed at Boynton Beach as well.Anyone have any info regarding how the side windows attach to the doors?....Also,does the dash mounted rear view mirror need to be relocated?....seems with the top down, the view would be obstructed.
Thanks!

Rearview mirror is fine as there is no top down position. It is either top installed or top removed.....

I had a soft top installed last summer in Boynton Beach. They did a great job but be advised that the top for the Backdraft is one piece across the windshield so it can't be folded up and placed in the trunk. For me it was a waste of $1900.

I don't know why they would tell you that. Unless you have some big audio system back there the top kit does in fact fit in the trunk. Have you tried it?

The lads at ERA have some good top install info here http://www.erareplicas.com/427man/top/softtop.pdf
I have only ever seen soft top headers bows that are split in the middle.

Cashburn, the piece that goes across the windshield is one solid piece. Since it won't fold I can't see any way to get it in the trunk. I tried many times but there's no way that I can see to get it in there.

You place it rolled up in the bag. Then feed the end as far into the passenger corner where the harness mounts are, once it's in that far you can get it totally in the trunk openining. Then take the other end and swing it into the the driver side quarter and you can rotate the whole thing so it is quarter panel to quarter panel.
It has to be rolled up and folded properly to fit in bag.
The ass of the car is wider than the windshield so you know it can fit

Hey Jay...With all that spare time you and Brian have, how about video taping an install of the top and how you guys fit it in the truck, then post it on youtube! lol
I'd actually love to see it myself even though I haven't had to use the top yet.
Hope all is well with you guyz!
