Default Pushers in a BDR

Thought I should post this in a separate post just because several people have expressed interest in the pusher fans that I put in BDR687. What I did is far from the only way and I know that others have put the pushers in their BDR as well as a couple of dealers. So I invite anyone who has put them in a BDR to chime in on this thread with anything pertinent and show pics if possible. This just seems like something that isn't that hard and that a lot of people seem to like. The cross flow of info could be pretty good as well.

To start, I got my fans here on CC in the classifieds and have no idea where they originally came from. They were attached to a single small piece of square tubing with no other bracing or brackets. I started by boxing in the motor mounts with the same size tubing just so the whole thing would be stable. The mount brackets I made from a couple of small pieces of angle iron and bolted them through the fiberglass on either side of the radiator opening. I should note that one should be careful drilling here because your horns and quick lifts are right on the other side. Once the measuring and mounting of the brackets was done the motor mount assembly was bolted in place. I used nyloc nuts at each bolt and large washers where the nuts tightened to fiberglass. I also used Loctite on the fans and the fan set screws. Losing one of them could get ugly. Once the fan/motors were mounted I wired them to the "fan2" pigtail that sits right where the main fan plugs in. Now the pushers come on automatically when the temp switch in the lower radiator hose clicks on the main fan as well. Here are a couple of pics to help with the narrative:

OK, I showed you mine, now lets see YOURS!

Looks good, any specific reason you didn't center them on the radiator? (Period correct, preference, etc)

Honestly I'm not a fan... They actually block and disrupt more air then they flow and hooking them up to the temp sensor can result in them coming on at a bad time like when a kid at a car show is sticking his head in there or your phalanges...

I’ll definitely give you that they don’t move much air. However, I’ve been driving around here a good bit and even with the temps hovering around triple digits there has been no noticeable change in the engine’s temps. Once it gets up to a little over 80c it just sits there no matter whether we’re driving down the highway or sitting at a traffic light. Sides, I’m running a big inch FE with lots of original looking stuff so it’s for the visual impact anyway.

As far as loosing phalanges or little kid’s heads goes, if the wiring is run to Fan2 then they are slaved not only to the temp sensor but to the ignition switch as well. So if the kid (or the owner) comes up missing digits then I have to ask: wtf where they doing in there with the engine running? AS far as Cobra dangers go, the pipes are more of a threat than the fans by a huge margin.

So quite yer biatchin’ Jay and post some pics of the ones that you’ve done!

If you mean, why not lower, then the answer is that if it were any lower than what it is then I would be pushing the clearance for the oil cooler plumbing. Even though the plumbing isn't quiet done yet I did put the 90 degree elbows in place while I was doing the measurements. There are other issues though. One that you mentioned was originality and that was a consideration. Also, there is quite a bit of radiator up under that sloping area of the nose. This pic shows what I mean about the cooler fittings even though it's not a BDR

Forgot, your chassis is so old it does not have the updated wiring that allows fans to come on when the key is off/out ....

:

80C? Are you running the stock radiator and fan combo? I just replaced mine with the upgraded system and still am runnning around 90C (vs. 100-105C). The temp is ok now but just wondering how you are running so "cool". What degree thermostat are you using? 160 deg? 185 deg?

I'm running a 190 Tstat and as far as I can tell that's where it stays all the time. Doing the conversions between C and F with that little gauge is imprecise at best but it never goes all the way to 90C. Stock single fan/radiator and the pushers seem to have had no effect on the temp at all.

Yeah, reving an engine. That's something that I normally don't have a problem with. Seems like someone else had THAT problem!!

No, remember it's dirty because someone didn't stay ON the "ass-felt"! LOL You know of course that hardly anyone reading this will know what we're on about.
