Thanks Itbites.

Normally I would take it apart and clean it, but I was going to replace the carb anyway and I don't want to waste any time messing with it at this point. It would be a different story if it was a Holley 650DP or other mechanical secondary carb.

If the new carb does't work, then I will be taking it to a performance shop for inspection.

If the new carb doesn't get here this weekend, maybe for the heck of it, i'll brake it down and clean everything just to see how it does.

Thanks,

Tom

Thumbs up

Hello Everyone,

Problem is solved!!!!!!! It was the carb!

I ordered a QuickFuel Q-650 carb from B2 Motorsports as recommended by Brent Lykins. I pulled the old holley avenger off and dropped the new carb on this afternoon. She fired right up and all I had to do was adjust the primary fuel level (love the sight glass windows by the way) and adjust the idle screw.

Took her for a spin and no more breaking up under full throttle! Throttle response is awesome.....it's like a whole new car! Feels like I installed a supercharger to be honest.

Anyway, thanks for everyone's help and a Special thanks goes the Brent at B2 Motorsports. He was very helpful and answered all my questions. To be honest, his customer service and accessibility is second to none. I emailed him last Sunday evening around 7:00pm and received and email back within the hour. I asked if he could setup a carb for me and have delivered to me by today. It arrived today just before 1:00pm. Awesome service!

Before every carb goes out, he disassembles and inspects them. He sets them up specifically for your engine. There was a card in the box with all the jetting sizes, air bleeds and such. Almost everything was changed and the new numbers hand written in. I have to say, it runs and feels like his changes are spot on!

Thanks again Brent!

Tom

I'm still curious as to what is wrong with the Holley? I had one and it worked great. In fact I bought one to replace a Barry Grant carb that was giving me fits. The Holley solved all my problems, just like your new carb did. Strange how this works!

Are you going to just dump the carb or clean it? I am just wondering if there is something wrong inside. My BG carb got cleaned, rebuilt and it still had problems on another car. I guess sometimes you just can't figure them out!!!

Hi SkipB,

I think the issue with the Holley Street Avenger has more to do with Roush than with Holley. Supposedly, Roush tuned these carbs for their engines and a lot of people had problems with them. Especially, those built in 2004-2005 which is when my engine was built. D111 on this forum has the same 342R motor as me and had the same problem. He sent his back to Holley and they changed some of the "Roush tuned" parts and adjusted his carb and it ran great when he got it back. I could of done that, but I wanted mechanical secondaries and a more race oriented carb, so I ordered a new one istead of speeding time on the Holley. I've read many postes on this forum and on FFCARS.com where others spent lots of time and money trying to fix their Roush tuned Holley to no avail and eventually ended up replacing it. I didn't want to go down that road.

I've also read many threads where people have had problems with the BG carbs a well. Some have great luck with them and some don't. I personally think that BG had some quality control issues on some of their parts. I think they are now out business form what I've heard so maybe the issues had something to do with that or their failing business had something to do with the quality control issues. If anyone is a BG fan, please don't beat me up about what I just said. I am only repeating what I have heard from others.

Anyway, I don't know what I am going to do with the Holley. I may contact them and se if they can check it out for me and make the changes to it that they did for D111. Then I would probably sell it on eBay or keep it for a spare.

I just took my car out again a few minutes ago and it is a beast! The throttle response and power is awesome! I also believe that the reason mine runs so well is because of Brent at B2 motorsports and his vast knowledge and experience. He set my carb up specifically for my engine and changed almost all the jets, bleeds and power valve, etc. He nailed it perfectly. His price was almost the same as Jegs and Summit, but he spends the time to completely disassemble and inspect the carb, change the jets, etc to suit the specific engine and send it out. I called him several times with questions and was always available and helpful. I can't say enough about his service!

Anyway, I'm glad the Holley is working for you and again, I think the problem is more with Roush and how they set the carb up than with Holley.

Tom

one other thing to check, Fire up the engine at night, lights out so it is dark and see if any of the wires are glowing. I found this problem with a friends miss, his had new wires, cap Rotor, with MSD Ign. The Ign throws a huge spark and can light up the insulation on even 8.0 wires. Just a thought and no $$. Running 8.5 with no problems.

I had similar problems as Tomcobra17 on a mild crate 302 (not a Roush) with a 670 SA made in 2005. I did all the same things to try to resolve the high RPM miss but to no avail.

I read the good results that Tom had so I ordered and installed a Q650 Quick Fuel carb as recommended by Brent from B2 Motorsports. Brent tuned the carb to my engine and it runs Great!!!! It fired up the first time and has unbelievable throttle response. No more high RPM miss and just runs a lot smoother as well. Great job Brent!

Because of this old post, I ordered a carb from Brent too and WOW. Should of done this sooner! I had a leaky baseplate throttle shaft and a couple things going on anyway, so ordering a new tuned one was the way to go, and very reasonable on the price. Brent was very quick to respond.

All of that to say, if you are reading this post because you are trying to figure out your Street Avenger... just call Brent at Lykins Motorsports.

I have BD 329 with a Ford 392 crate motor and car was built by Cashburn that was purchased from original owner in 2017. It does have a Holley 770 Avenger. I had the same exact problem with break up at a lower RPM (maybe 2500). The car had 2700 miles at that time. Stupid question- does the car wreak of fuel in your garage but you see no visible fuel leaks from tank to the carb? My fix was having DeVinci Carbs in Houston rebuild the carb and so some minor modifications like shaving the choke horn off and little bit of metering plate work. He did find some crab in the carb. The rebuild fixed the stumble and reduced the smell of fuel in the garage by 80%. Been good to go ever since and that was 5000 miles OK.

It did smell like fuel for 24 hours after a drive, not the case anymore. There was play in the throttle shaft on the baseplate and you could see fuel come out. Instead of me replacing the baseplate and rebuild the carb... it was easier just to have Brent make up a carb.
