Default RT3B Thoughts

So it's been awhile since I've been on the forum but I have been bitten again. I sold my first hand built cobra a couple years ago and hav missed it since. Anyway, this time I think I'm leaning toward Backdraft, specifically the RT3B model. My question for u guys is what options/setup would you recommend. I'm thinking I want to run a coyote setup but don't know much about them and should I be looking for anything particular. What extras r recommended. One thing I'd imagine would be to swap out the side pipes for better flowing ones. Also for the RT3B model, how have they held up, aesthetic wise with all the blacked out items. Any help is appreciated

Some points on the RT3B...

The chassis all leave the factory as a standard RT3, so when people are shopping if a certain color combination grabs you it does not have to be eliminated from contention because it is marked as a B or not.

Also due to this fact you can add as many or few items from the B "menu" to a standard RT3 as you like. Generally speaking, the customers we have worked with want the black out trim and then tailor the rest of the chassis to their taste or budget.

The B option has been available for approx. 3 full seasons now. In regards to the trim holding up it has been in great shape on all the cars that have returned to us for service over the years. I often tell people one of my favorite Backdrafts to "own" so far was our suede white demo car with matte black trim. It was so easy to keep clean and no time in the polishing/waxing department... it was get in and go with a 5 minute wipe down with Windex every so often.

The Coyote setup is emerging as a significant portion of sales. The downside for us is the install complexity and time is much higher. In fact installers side by side will complete 1 Coyote powered car to every 2.5 small block Ford powered setups. The upside is the engines promise amazing reliability and durability ... they are after all designed to go 200k+ miles in a daily driver Mustang/F150/etc. And we are now at the point where the elements that go around it (alternators, brackets, air intake, etc.) are becoming standardized on each install. Depending on who is doing your Coyote install pay attention to how they finish it off and ask them what alternator they are running and how many amps etc. it is. This is important if you want to add electronic accessories and also because the computer etc. that runs this engine needs its fair share of juice.

If it counts these are my favorites on a Coyote powered Backdraft:

3.91 LSD Rear
TKO-600 Transmission
Tonneau Cover
Heated Seats
Leather Steering Wheel
18" Knock Off Wheels (standard now)
3M Paint Protection (rear and tops of doors)
Hurst Short Shifter
Solid Motor Mounts
Aluminum Fuel Tank Option with Internal Fuel Pump
Ceramic Coated Headers/Sidepipes/Heat Shields

And I like the black out, though not everyone is into that look.

I have chassis 903 and worked with Jay just over 2 years ago on the specs to build my chassis. While I did not opt for the blackout of all the bright work, I did end up with a number of the options that are packaged as the B edition. What was important to me was....

Wildwood brakes
LSD (3.64) rear
Solid diff mounts
Solid motor mounts
Adjustable rear camber arms
Larger aluminum radiator

And Jay recommended a few other things including the 3M paint protection for the rear. Which I am glad he pushed me in that direction now.

As with my build, I wanted something different as I prepared for a challenge installing a 4.6 Terminator. There certainly is a level of complexity that is not associated with traditional push rod carburated engines. Electronics, fuel delivery and the various sensors and computer to run these modern powerplants can be mind boggling at first. But in the end, good planning and engineering will pay dividends down the road.

Taking just about 2 years to complete, I am extremely pleased with my decision and choice of powerplant. While it does not have the rumble of a big block....it certainly helps having boost on tap.

Hope this helps.

Jay did 1124 for me with almost the exact same setup described above. I have a Roush SC Coyote and love it! There is a lot going on under the hood with this setup and would highly recommend Jay to do the work!

With the coyote set up do you still get the heavy gasoline smell in the garage after driving?

I just took delivery of 1134 from Jay and Brian. the set-up is almost identical to the one above posted by Cashburn. I have put about 150 miles on it since Friday and get no gasoline smell from the electronically controlled fuel injected Coyote.

As for the the set up: the Coyote is very impressive. Being a high winding motor the 391's are a good fit. The power from a 5.0 is amazing and install (while tight) is super clean. Check out the build photos from Vintage for 1134 to see for yourself. At this point I would not have done anything differently, but have left room for upgrading in the future.

Would have posted a picture now, but have not loaded any to the site yet (but will soon).

Picture below:

The Coyote in a Cobra is an impressive package. Very clean install and enough power to make your head spin.

We did leave room for expansion just in case and the car is set up to add a supercharger at a later date.
