Burping Cooling System
Hi Guys,
I am having problems getting the air out of the cooling system after flushing the system. Could you guys give me a hand on the instructions for burping the air out of the cooling system on the BDR. Being the BDR only has the overflow tank to fill by, there must be a trick to this that I am not getting....You would think that an easy task like this would not give me problems...

Park it on incline, nose up and let it run with cap off. We use a pressure bleed system now but that method worked for our first 6 years.

Thanks Jay, I will give that a try. I had the front up on jack stands but did not have the engine running. I will give that a shot. Might borrow the neighbors driveway being it has a little more incline.

I say take Jay & Joey.s's responses and combine them. At least with Joey.s's link you will not lose as much coolant or whatever mixture you are running.

The funnel way is the easiest. Or cut the bottom of a 2 litre Coke plastic bottle, use a hole saw cut the top of a old radiator cap, and glue, or silastic the top of the Coke bottle into the radiator cap.

This is the fastest, most reliable way to fill a difficult to fill/burp cooling system I have found. It is simple, quick and there are no air bubbles left - anywhere.

i used loosen the temperature sending unit on the intake manifold during the intial fill. may work the next time.

The funnel is also a great way to check for head gasket leaks. Any bubbles showing in the funnel is usually a head gasket leak.

The "in garage" method is to wedge two asprins between the thermo disk and seat. The themo will stay open long enough to purge the system.
Works every time for me...

Thanks guys. I think I got it. I made a funnel last night out of a two liter. I think I got the air out. I also had the front end way in the air.
I think I am going to try and get one of those vacuum units or the funnel with the correct fittings for next time. I think that will save me some time and some of the mess that I made

Couple questions for those that have done this:
1) how high does the front end need to be ? I used 1.5" blocks, let her run for a while (the fans were on); it never filled the funnel, even after 15 minutes
2) with air in system, can it run more hot than usual ?? I'm not boiling over, but she used to run at 90-degrees and last night was running closer to 100
Thanks for any thoughts...

Burping Cooling System
In the past with a C3 Corvette that I owned for over 30 years, had to go through the burping process since engine sat taller than the radiator in flushing radiator process.
Not sure the issue with a Backdraft as the water tank is higher than the engine block. Just did the first flush on a pre-owned Backdraft purchased five months ago. Did jack up one side of the car to get a little height, pulled plug, drained, installed plug, filled with distilled water plus the pink Water Wetter.
The only issue I had was stupid me, tried to tweek the plastic drain plub with a short box end wrench and broke the drain plug. Came out extremently easy with a small easyout but had to wait on a drain plug from Iconic.
Car runs cool as a cucumber in Texas heat- right at 180 degrees in 100 degree days and sitting at red lights. Now the AC in the car doesn't work with a darn. :-)

I drill a little hole in the thermostat and install it hole side down. Really helps in addition to having the car on an incline.
