Gee, mine has never been for sale...7 years and counting.

Jay likes to convince folks that they can't think without his self serving opinion...typical used car guy.

To cbreez: You have continued to own your car for 7 years, so you must be happy with it, despite your past negative posts.

As far as Jay and Vintage, why are you so critical? Have you had dealings with Jay and Brian? If not (as I suspect) you are contributing nothing to this site but your dribble.

Vintage has become the "go to guys" for these cars and have worked hard and built a fine reputation.

Whether you like it or not, that is a fact......ox

there's always a chance that there's a great deal out there but as far as dealers go j is the best BDR dealer, most knowledgeable and honest by his history,

Just to be clear, for my commentary: while I would not just go to Jay because everyone on this thread says to, I did not intimate that his services are not value added, especially to the well-heeled and less mechanically inclined. I do not have an opinion as to whether Jay is a huckster (I have no information either way as far as that goes). It just seemed to me that none of your responders have asked for much detail or know squat about the car you're looking at and yet all are saying just go to Jay.

I would recommend that if it seems like a good deal, check it out. You can get a mechanic to do a checkup on the engine health and address the smoking under acceleration concern. If the car is in good shape, has some records, and is the right price, the choice is yours. If your gamble is good, you saved money. If your gamble is bad, you will spend money and maybe be even with buying a used one from Jay anyway, but likely no worse... Again, look at the deal under its own merits and make a decision for yourself.

The market demographics for Kit Cobras (I've been around these longer than all y'all - so don't try to lecture me about kit vs replica) has changed drastically over the past 10 years and is light years from what it was 25 years ago. When I started playing toy Cobra, you had to really be a fabricator and builder to own one, but now most folks are well-off and just write checks and maybe do a little maintenance and some minor upgrades. I am not the type of owner that needs Jay's services and likely could not afford them anyway. If you are not inclined in hot rod construction and maintenance, I would recommend a firm like Jay's, but you have to be able to afford it.

Not a fact, just your opinion as I have mine...

I have not been happy with Backdraft Cobra's...too much work for a factory built new car and poorly engineered (I won't give you a list), built with salvage parts...but I bought one and I have lived with it... my decision. Constant work.
Too bad one can't speak about their experience good or bad, maybe too warn others what they are in for. Buyer Beware.
Jaybird feels he owns this forum because he spends a couple of bucks advertising. Always the last word. Do you know that many of his supporters are fake...created by him?
Those that actually bought from him can't face the truth.
There are many, many knowledgeable people about these simple replica's than Vintage...
The other poster had it right...Jay would know squat about a car across the country.

Can you post up these fake supporters? I sure hope you have something to back that up.

As said previously, have the seller "swap" the Covers and go from there. There should be no reason for him to turn that down.

Fake supporters? How about an accounting to back that up. Or just more dribble.

What an interesting turn on this thread. Too much mud being flung. While I did not buy my BDR from Jay, he was very engaged and helpful on the front end as one would assume in new car sales. What surprised me the most was that he continues to help even though I did not go through vintage due to timing.

Either way Jay knows the cars and goes out of his way to help not just customers or potential customers, but fans of the company who bought their car through a different dealer. That says a lot about his character.

I negotiated a price of $30k and the car is going to a mechanic for a full checkout.
-Engine and trans along with compression test
-Shocks, brakes tires
-leaks
-lights gauges
-Exhaust leaks and general undercarriage condition.
Anything else?

If it checks out I will fly there next week for a test drive

Here are the facts

BDR #387
408 stroker 530HP
TK500 trans
4500 miles
Full coupe cover cloth
Tourneau cover
Soft full car cover

The owner rates the condition as follows
Interior 8 (Needs detailing)
Mechanical 10
Engine bay 10
Exterior 10

I understand that all cobra need a yearly maintance check does anyone have a list of what should be done.

Also I live in north NJ and if someone has a BDR I would love to stop by and get an education this weekend if you are willing

Beautifull!!!! That how you do it. You will NOT loose money as this car should have sold in the low 40's. These are not modern cars with emissions, ac, anti-lock brakes. They are the simplest cars on the road. Dont get sucked into spending feel good money. Change the oil, watch oil level and drive the car. Period. Trans fluid is good for 50k miles, rear differentail 50K miles.

I would quick jerking off with the guy and if the car is not wrecked send the money. What happens with all your checks and balances is I will walk in and give the guy 31K cash and you will be out of the deal. why waste money on flying out there, just get it shipped. you have seen the pics havent you??

I don't know about the rest of you, but $30k is a suspiciously low price for a bdr in good condition with a 408w. At least $10k too low.
If it were me, I would fly out and personally view, inspect, the vehicle. Does it have a salvage title? Flood damage that was repaired. For that price, sum ting Wong.
Could be the once in a lifetime buy and the guy has an opportunity to buy something else at a great deal and just wants the quick cash to do it.
Either that or it's a divorce sale and the wife gets half and he's selling it too low to screw her out of her share.

Just to compare, a completed donor FFR in great condition can go for $30k.

I smell a rat. Go check it out. If it checks out, ship it home.

FWIW, I agree with Jim and Maxx. It's an awfully low price for what it seems to be and (if it checks out) it won't sit there forever.

Another FWIW, I bought my BDR687 from Jay but did the install myself and I’ve always had good interactions with Vintage since then. Even when I was asking inane questions!
