Best suggestion is to send the exhaust to Stainless Steel Specialists in TN. Have them replace the mufflers inside. I got a quote from them of $600.00 for them to replace them. This is a common problem with the factory exhaust.

Jim,
You should update this post on your experience.

I don't have a Backdraft, but I do have pipes from Stainless Specialties and they also have a kind of rattling, chattering sound on deceleration that I'm not particularly fond of. There is no fiberglass in the stainless pipes but I believe there is some sort of ceramic wadding material that serves the same purpose. So, I'm very interested in other's experience with their pipes.

I have Patriot auger muffler inserts (Patriot Muffler Inserts H3843 - Free Shipping on Orders Over $99 at Summit Racing) in 3.5" tubing - no packing of any kind, but a metallic sound to the exhaust which some don't like. If these rattle it's because they're not tight enough. I pounded mine in with a mandrel and a heavy hammer. I can't remember whether I used a 32 oz ball pein or a hand sledge, but it took some force. That was after the first attempt at installation when they were too loose and the rattling drove me crazy.

I sent to Stainless Specialties a set of pipes to have new mufflers installed. Sent him $600.00 plus freight. He after several weeks more like a month or so returned them to me. I tired to install them. What a joke. The welding looked like a 10 year old idiot did the work. The mufflers also had dents in them. When I put them up to the car they were welded so far off it was impossible to get them on the car. I informed him of the mess he made and returned them. After he had another couple of weeks I had him sent them to Jay for inspection. Jay said they were garbage. At least I got my money back but no pipes. Got a new set from Jay and they fit. The noise from the new pipes is not to bad.
As for me I will never do business with Stainless Specialties again.

Jim thanks, I actually came across your thread detailing your experience with stainless specialties during my search for new pipes. At this point I've had enough with the backdraft pipes and I am nearing an order with Classic Chambers for a set of their cobra pack mufflers. I've read dozens of reviews of their product and listened to several video clips, so at this point I think I may just have to take the plunge and go with Classic Chambers and hope they solve the crappy rattle from these backdraft pipes.

One of my pipes is rattling so bad it sounds as if it's falling apart. It's embarrassingly loud from outside the car. My other pipe sounds fine.

Has anyone figured out a fix yet on these?

Jay-do the new cars have different side pipes now (mines from late 13')

The only way these Cobra mufflers would "rattle" is if the cores come loose inside, then it's simply time to replace them with something else. High horsepower does not make them rattle - something wrong with the construction does, or if they are old & the cores get rusted-out. Old mufflers can look good on the outside, but when you cut them open they can be rust flakes. Cut many open at Tenneco & many that were just 2 years old were rust powder inside.

Like Jay suggested in this thread, this sounds like the heats shield. I had the same issue (sound) and found the bolt snapped off the HS strap. In the 2-years I have owned my BDR, I have now replaced a strap 4 times.

Thanks for the input but I can assure you it is not the heat shield. That was the first thing I checked and when I used a rubber mallet on it the sounds were coming from inside. I am certain it's the core but don't know what to replace it with yet.

Default Classic Chambered

I switched to the Classic Chambered mufflers on my car, and I love them.

I have a Contemporary with a 428 and it had the original mufflers. I didn't measure the flow path, but I'd guess about 1 7/8".

The CC mufflers are 3", 24" long, with packing, and I installed them with the baffles facing forward, as recommended by CC. They are slightly louder than the original restrictive mufflers, but not bad at all. I have a chop saw and a MIG, so it was an easy project.

I also installed O-2 bungs while I was at it. I plan on having them ceramic coated, but I was getting tired of not having my car on the road, so that's for another day.

I do not know how my old post regarding the sending of the side pipes to Stainless Specialties became associated with this post. On my original post I did make the comment but after sending the pipes to them and having them damaged he returned my money and left me with no pipes. Got a set from Jay and they are on the car now. I cannot recommend Stainless Specialties at all.

I don't know how this old post got on you request for side pipes. I sent my pipes to Stainless Specialties. You can't believe what he did to them. I eventually got the money back I paid him and bought a new set from Jay. The old ones were trash.

Did the new set fix the horrific rattling?

Jay-did Reg change who they sourced the pipes from?

Nothing more annoying than a rattle that you just can't pinpoint. Best of luck correcting the problem.

Yes. It changed in the 1200s I think.

Default Side Pipes Rattle

The "chatter" is nonexistent when accelerating, but when I lay off the gas and the car is in gear around 2K-3K rpm the side pipes rattle pretty good.

Has backdraft changed anything with the side pipes in the past 2 years?
I have a big block chevy in mine and the side pipes rattle because the baffle is loose. I'm in the process of repairing as we speak . Does anyone know where i can buy header flange gaskets in copper 4 1/4 square with 4 1 7/8 to 2 inch holes?

Thanks Jay, that would be mine. What is your solution if a car came into your shop with this issue?
