Back in a backdraft: Sidepipe questions

Hi All

I't been a few years but I'm finally back in a backdraft, took delivery last week. Car runs great and happy with it so far, but noticed the sidepipes chatter / rattle a lot more than i remember. The "chatter" is nonexistent when accelerating, but when I lay off the gas and the car is in gear around 2K-3K rpm the side pipes rattle pretty good.

Has backdraft changed anything with the side pipes in the past 2 years?

Hi had mine for about a year mine don't do that May be the baffles r loose u may have to get with other bd owners check out pipe holders check if split cut outs around pipes

Yes, pipes are new supplier and design for about 2 years.

ok thanks for the replies. I figure if something was loose it would chatter/rattle all the time, this seems to only happen laying off the gas while in gear. and it's pretty loud

Hi Jay

It's a 427 Smeding Cobra dart block Dynod at ~585hp at the crank. I don't think there is anything broken in the side pipe but if there was say a broken weld in there, would removing the side pipe and shaking it reveal anything?

That's a Smeding 585... but in regards to your question a loose baffle you can hear simply by moving the pipe with your foot. Often it's actually the heatshield that is loose and/or has a broken stud.

Thanks Jay, so it's the big power causing the chattering pipes. Only happens during engine braking above 3K rpm though, never in neutral or under acceleration.

I moved the pipes with my foot as you described and even tapped the mufflers with a rubber mallet and they sound uniform throughout, nothing noticeably loose or rattling about. Heat shields are secure, won't budge when I try to turn them. So I wonder if there's a better way to secure the side pipes than the rubber grommet or if I should consider upgrading the pipes to something that can better handle the ponies. Appreciate feedback from folks on these options

I don't think so. The pipes are shaking fast and rattling. Backfire would be more popping no?

Mine also rattles when I am going slow. It probably rattles all the time, you just can not hear it going at some speed. I was told that the baffle is a straight through fiberglass pipe with holes in it. It sits in the side pipe loose. That the rattle is normal. I really do not know for sure.

BDR 1340 does the same thing. and I have taken the rubber mallet to them as well. It is not the 585 hp, because I have the 5.0 Coyote. It looks to me like back pressure, when you watch the pipe with the door open. All I know is its annoying. I talked with Jay on changing the mufflers out. If that noise is normal I don't want normal Jay and Brian will figure it out you can be sure of that.

Mine is 13## something, but good to know its "normal" but it's definitely annoying. Backdraft defintiely changed something since 2011/2012 cars because my previous car didn't have rattling sidepipes like this.

Please post an update if a fix emerges.

I looked inside the pipes with a small light and you're right, it's straight through with perforated baffles. I couldn't see all the way through and not sure if they are sitting loose or not, but they aren't "packed" like before.

In any case the only way to stop the can-of-bolts at slow speed is to go into neutral.

The best suggestion I can give you is to send your side exhausts to Stainless Steel Specialties in TN. I talked with them and was given a price of $600.00 to remove the mufflers and replace them. I think this will resolve the rattle in the pipes. Much has to do with quality. I sent the pipes to them. Much to my surprise they came back is one screwed up mess. Never again will I go this route. They were totally trashed. I purchased a new set from Jay.

I definitely would consider this option, but I'd have to know 100% that it would cute this annoying rattle before dropping another $600.

Have you done this successfully? And what if the pipes are ceramic coated?

I wonder if you could jam a fiberglass wedge between the baffle and the metal
pipe to stop the rattle ? Just an idea.
