Default Aluminum fuel tank leak

BD #2229 RT4 500 miles
The other day I noticed the smell of gas when went into the garage. First thought was carb, it was dry. At the back of the car I noticed a little bit of gas on the floor. Thinking I had a pinhole in the tank i crawled underneath and saw nothing but some dribble down the front of the tank.

I removed the carpet and cover from the fuel pump area and a small amount of gas was sitting on top of the recessed area where the pump and sending unit are located dripping down the front of the tank. after cleaning that i left it to sit over night. Next day there was fuel around the the sending unit. I pumped out a couple of gallons of gas and I removed the sending unit replaced the rubber gasket with a cork one from KUS. The old gasket was split around one of the screw holes and the whole gasket looked a little swollen. Problem solved.

Not quite, the next morning i checked again and a film of gas ,a very minuscule amount in the same area. Just on a hunch I removed the gas cap and left it out over night checked the next morning and the area was dry. Put the cap back in and it was wet again the next and by wet I mean just a film of fuel.Bad fuel cap?

Next I just placed the fuel cap in the tank filler neck and used the Lemans cap to push it down, it goes in but not far enough to latch. I left it that way over night and next morning it was dry.I took it out for a vigorous drive an a winding road and did some heavy breaking to get fuel sloshing around. Checked it when i got home and everything was dry including the filler neck. Bad Fuel cap?

Next step is to refill the tank and see what happens. New fuel cap should arrive today.

Thought or suggestions. Oh yeah and friggin fuel gauge doesn't work

Is your tank vented?

The problem description sounded like an unvented tank or perhaps a vented tank with a malfunctioning vent.

Do you know if the tank vent is properly working?
