I just did a pan capacity test per eschaider's recommendation. I used water instead of oil. To the baffle it held 5.25 qts. Going any higher will introduce oil into the front chamber. My filter holds 1/2 a qt. This equates to 5.75 qts. That's a difference of 3.75 qts from Moroso's advertised capacity of 9.5. I know these Coyote's have more oil flowing through them than the average old school small block but can it be that much? I want to get as much of the previous posts calculations right so I can mark my stick if even necessary.

I think you are over thinking this. The Coyote dipstick is in the block. It won’t change when you change oil pans. It is set to the level some Ford engineer thought was correct.

If this was mine. I would fill to full on the dipstick then run the engine for 10 minutes and then let it sit for about ten minutes. Top it off and then you know the new volume.

That is just what I did... after several drives and checks I took the level to the top area of the "full level grid close to the upper hole" on the stock dip stick, I do have the remote oil filter as well and the volume was just about 9.5 quarts total

Don't forget about a quart to wet the insode of the engine and a half quart or so for the oil caught in the fog surrounding the rotating assembly. Put one more in for your filter. 2.5 + 5.25 will bring you to 7.75 qts — call it 8 qts. Lay your windage tray in the pan and fill to about a inch blow the tray maybe a quart— probably pretty close to where you are now. Add a half a quart to a quart for oil in the return cycle to the oil pan and you should be right at or near 9 to 9.5 qts. Mark the level on your dipstick as your fill to level. Viola! You're done.

Understood. I have to back down your numbers by a 1/2 qt. My filter (Motorcraft FL500S) only takes a half qt. when I fill it with a fresh oil change. Thanks Ed.

If you can get within a half quart or so of what optimal fill level is you will be doing an excellent job. That oil fog I was speking of that the rotating assembly creates in the crankcase is a variable number. At idle it is very small, at 6000 rpm it is noticeably bigger. This particular job assignment on engines like we use is a lot like horseshoes and hand grenades. All you've got to be is close. If it were a dry sump system you could be much more precise. Wet sump systems have much greater latitude between too little and too much
