Rearend troubles
I have a new BDR with only 39 miles on it and I have developed a leak in the rear end already. It seems to be coming from a plate above the fill plugs. There is some sort of electronic sensor in this plate that has two small wires leading out of it that have been cut, presumably because it is not used for anything.
What type of BMW rear end is in this car and would you know the capacity because I will need to fill it again. Also will tightening this plate take care of the problem or will I need to remove it and replace the seal around it. Thanks for any help you can lend. Trueoo7 |
The part u are talking about is the speedo sensor.Your leak will be coming from there. Send your postal address to Reg at Backdraft and he will send u a new "o" ring. It is just a a push in sensor. The "o"ring holds it in. U fill the oil untill it is level with the top plug. Your diff is an e36 diff used in3 series from +-1993 year model. Yours is probably out of a 325 or a 328. Do not overtighten the rear cover. It is unlikly that it will leak.

Thanks Tony.

well I tried to pull out the piece in question but unfortunately I cracked it because it is not pushed in and held in place by the o-ring. It is actually held in by a plate that is bolted on. (2 bolts) Hard to see, in a bad spot . There was a blue plastic o ring, sort of, its a ring molded onto the plastic piece but it doesn't look replacable but that was where the leak was coming from. Will have to take piece to BMW dealer for replacement.

Nope. I'll get you one in the mail tomorrow. I have a new diff here on the shop floor from changing a gear ratio last week.
Sorry about the problem you're having. Email me your address and it'll get taken care of. Robert |

Received the part today with o-ring, thank you. The o-ring was missing off of mine hence the leak, or it disintegrated into the rear, which is why I was confused when you mentioned the o-ring. Thanks again. Trueoo7 |
Odd... The diffs are remanufactured so I have to guess that it was left off. Tony and Reg found a few leaking and put a new o-ring. I didn't think to ask if it was missing completely.
But hey, that's why it's called a warranty. Glad we could help. Robert |
