Default Ray Dot Windshield mounted mirror or fendor mount?

What are the pros and cons of the Ray dot windshield mounted mirror verses the fendor mounted mirror. I heard that the fendor mounted one is of no use. Although I think it looks better.

I have driver and passenger side fender mirrors and both are useless. I'd like to mount a Ray Dot but wonder how dumb it'd look with 3 mirrors. Go with the Ray Dot.

How about door mounted (Comp Car Style) Raydots? I love mine. I was going to go with windshield mount but hadn't found the brackets at the time. Now that I have them this way I love it!

I have ray dot windshield plates for any car....you have to drill holes to mount with existing windshield plate screws. Unfinished billet around 15 bucks plus shipping.

Fender and door mounting will always be a bit marginal due to the rear fender height.

Three stamped Raydyots, all in a row. The middle one is a factory convex, slightly tinted. Works great at night...no headlight glaring.

Motorsports Int'l if you want them dye stamped.

I got my mount from Anthem Motors in Phoenix. It is made for a Backdraft and clamps to the window frame (no drilling). I used the 300? chrome Raydot style mirror from Finish Line and made an extension tube 2.25" long out of 3/4" copper water pipe painted black. The tube goes between the ball and socket of the mirror. You need to add a ss hex head screw about 1.5" long to the kit from Anthem. The hex head goes through the mount, with a 1 inch ss flat washer to spread the load on the bracket, into the allthread coupler supplied. Only drawback is that once the mirror is tied down you cannot move it around. Looks pretty good and is very stable. Sorry no pics.

Pat Buckley made the mirror mounts...no drilling. Uses existing windshield hole.

Cobrak,

The widow pillar mount is best for rear visiblity. If mounted on the front fender, visibility is poor due to the arc of the rear fender. I have mine mounted on the widow pillar with a polished aluminum mount.

That looks great, just like the one on my left side. However I am trying to mount a RayDot on the right side and the Finishline bracket does not now work. Reg is out of stock for the time being (Tony is making some in S.A.) so I am looking around. Rogers bracket sounds great though if it doesn't match my old one I will need two.
I hope he posts a picture soon.

I used two Finishline adapter plated on the windshield frames and they lined right up with the existing screws. I could have even mounted them to the upper two screws, which probably would have given better visability, but I didn't care for the looks. I also got a dash mount adapter from Finishline for the third Raydot and I like the looks of the whole set up. Wish I'd been able to have both the windshield and dash mounts in hand before buying them. They are extremely simple and would have been easy to make. Oh well.

Mine are the flat brackets shown above...I had them made with no holes since the windshield on the BDR is different than FFR, Classic Roadsters ect. I made a paper mold from the flat bracket then took a punch and marked "punched" where the holes are..then transferred to the flat bracket. This bracket is flat aluminum billet cut by a waterjet. The edges are still sharp so a light file and wire brush will ge the brushed look...then spray with laquer spray and your there. You can mount these right/left...you locate and drill the holes...same bracket used on either side.

I, too, used the Finishline aluminum brackets to mount the mirror to the windshiled mounting frame. Holes lined right up and the bracket works left or right.

One comment though. The left side was a major improvement since it got the mirror above the fender. The right side wasn't as successful though since the mirror is designed to be mounted with the bolt end pointing down. This would allow whatever rotation would be needed to get it pointed at the driver. However, since the mirror gets mounted with the bolt in the horizontal, the up and down adjstment becomes the l/r and there just isn't enough to get mirror pointed at the driver. It's close but no cigar. Again, I'm yalking about the Right Side. FWITW

Just got back from our test drive of the finished product. We got the ray dot mounted to the windshield. Looks great and is functional being that you can actually see through it. I thought at first it would shake going down the road but no way solid as a rock.

Lightbulb raydot alternative?

I have the Raydot mounted on the windshield post but it's still lacks in any real visabilty. It's difficult to adjust (set screws) and it's field of vision is only fair at best. Do you guys find this to true as well?
It would be great if someone invented a mirror that was adjustable by hand from the cockpit ( like every other rear view mirror on the planet ) but still kept the look and feel of the Raydot, Also a better lens system with a better field of vision........are you listening Raydot?
