351 Alternator
What did you guys use for an alternator. Is a voltage regulator needed in these new single wire alternators? What's the minimum amp? Thanks.

We like to use a 100amp 1 wire GM alternator with the Roush billet aluminum bracket setup (it's designed for a GM alt and not a Ford alt.)
Single wire means = single wire. No external voltage regulator.

I use a vintage Ford alternator with the four wire regulator. Works well and I have not had any problems.
I have heard of people having belt alignment problems with the GM units, so if you are going that route, make sure the belts line up or you'll have it in the air cleaner.

This is why we use the Roush brackets, they are designed to put the GM alt on the SBF.

Do you guys know if there is a spacer required to line up a serpentine belt using a March 30380 kit?

Jeff, is that the high or low mount kit from March?
I use a "Powermaster" 100a 1-wire alternator - is that the GM one? I don't know.
Had to re-machine all new spacers for the bracket. Water pumps vary, too... I just measured for the spacers and had new ones made out of a piece of aluminum tube. Nicer than the ones provided by March anyways.

It is a high mount kit. Looks like Powermaster is a preferred alternator. Seems like 100 amps id plenty and single wire alternators have not need for a regulator. As far as spacing, I will see this weekend when I install the kits. Thanks guys.

Do you have the CHP mount and spacer kit? They copied the Roush setup so it should work well if you have the correct GM alternator.

I've had lots of good results with reliability in Delco (GM) alternators, and not such good results with Ford, particularly externally regulated ones. So I'm using an ordinary '72 - '84 non-metric 63 amp unit with a chrome case. It's a standard factory 2 wire unit. I like the 2 wire units because the alt starts charging when you start the engine, and charges while idling.
The charge wire goes to the battery like the one wire units do, and the other goes to the ignition wire. My ignition wire goes to ign wire on MSD box, carb elect choke, and alt. Have a Radio Shack diode in-line at alt to eliminate feed back to ignition. It's not that big of a deal, is what I'm saying.
Standard reconditioned about $59 - $79. Chrome was $99. Sounds like others have done this if Roush makes a bracket set for SBF. Be sure alt doesn't interfere with upper control arm on Cobras.
Powermaster is good also. You get a new, not reconditioned unit. I'm using PM starter ($159), and it's great. About half the size and weight of stock Ford.

Alternator problem again!!
Got the new sloted braket from march. The alternator lined up great! Bolts are fine just need to find a sleeve for the adjustable rod so the bolt won't rattle. My problem is that the lead coming out of the alternator is rubbing against my Vic Jr. heads!!! I'm using a summit alternator 1 wire 100amp. The only issue is where the lead is located. Can I just boot the lead after I attach it to the brackets? Will it ground through the the motor if it touches?

called march they told me to just unbolt the back casing on the alternator and rotate it 180. Since alt is not in front of me I can't see why this would not work...Well maybe next week we will know!

When you remove the bolts that hold the case together you will have to pull the case apart just enough to clear the guide pins.Be careful not to pull it apart too much or the brushes will pop out.
