How much for a BDR
Hi everyone. I have been looking for a Cobra on and off for about 2 years. I have settled on the BDR. I was curious if I do the install on the engine and trans how much will it cost to complete. I am talking a simple 302 around 300 hp and a Tremac 3550. I am guessing 34K complete. Does this sound about right?
Thanks Again

It depends on how much you are paying for the BDR. I don't think you are talking big bucks to hook your 302 and 5 speed.
Is the BDR a turnkey minus the engine and Tremac?

BDRCobra,
Like you, I didn't have a clear understanding of all the costs involved in building a Cobra. Even with a turn-key minus roller like a BDR, there's more than just the cost of an engine and the tranny. My base engine was 7295 and the TKO 600 was 1678. You can probably shave some cost off that with your engine/tranny combo, but all the other necessary bits and pieces can add up to $4000 plus. Check out the thread I started regarding what's needed for a BDR HERE. Good luck!

Drop me an email. I can give you quote with the motor and transmission and all parts to complete it. Then you just take that out, at the sametime you'd have a pretty good shopping list to work from.

Thanks for all the replies. It is funny as I get closer to making the plunge I asks myself more questions. I need to call the Department of Motor Vehicles and figure out how to title a new backdraft as a mid 60's model. I am positive if I title as a 2005 I do not have any chance of passing emmisions.
Thanks again everyone.

Your bio does not show the state you are from so we can't give any advice yet. The questions has been asked repeatedly over the years so do a search here or ask spicifically for information for your state.
As to cost to finish if you purchase a late explorer 302 engine for about 1,500 a t-5 rebuilt for 800 your estimate would be close. But don't do it to cheeply or your will be upgrading (paying twice) very shortly.
Good luck!

Let us know where you live and we can then advise on the registration process. Even if your state does list it as a 2005, they will apply a very liberal "composite emissions" standard to it.

BDRCobra,
Since you don't list where you are located, an answer to your questions are a little bit difficult.
The basic car itself is I believe $28,900.00. (There are many options you may want to purchase as well.) You will need to factor in freight, unless you are going to pick it up in Florida. Freight could run your bill up a $1000.00 or more depending on where you are located.
Then add the cost of an engine. There are used 302s, new ones, mild 302s, hot, high horsepower 302s, etc. So the cost could be all over the place. (Don't buy too mild an engine, because the first thing you will want is more horsepower!)
Now throw in a transmission. I think the 3550 has been replaced by a new model, but it sounds like you may have a 3550 available? A transmission can run all kinds of different amounts.
Now factor in putting the car together with all the other parts needed to complete an engine and transmission installation. Get a copy of the Backdraft Assembly Manual. It lists most of what you will need. So, do it yourself and save. Have someone else do it, and the costs go up considerably.
I would count on spending at least $40K, and it could run into the high 40s depending on options, labor, taxes and licensing (don't try to sneak by on taxes, it'll bite you in the butt later!). So, have fun, but be realistic.

Doing it yourself on the cheap, the $34k goal is attainable. It will depend heavily on what your starting price is. We have a car we can work with you on price to help you reach your goal. Again though, I'd need to know your location.
