Is it true that all DOT 5 fluid is purple? If so, I should be OK adding some DOT4.
Round midnight, good question if you have DOT 5 now as I've reaqd that DOT 5 is not too compatible. You can go up easily, not down.

Just picked up on this thread. I have #128 and was told to use Dot 5 in the brakes and Dot 3 (or 4) on the clutch. I bled my clutch before the WSCBash and it came out black and heavy (sank to the bottom of the bleed bottle). Burned I assume from the header heat. I talked to Papa Frank at the Bash and he said to use synthetic DOT 3 in the clutch but I checked temperature ratings and am sticking with Castrol DOT 3/DOT 4. I am replacing my clutch master (from Summit) and rebuilding the actuator. Wrapped the clutch cyl with ceramic insulation.
I recently changed the brake pressure switch on my BDR. It was located at the bottom end of the master cylinder so some brake fluid drippled put when I removed the switch. That fluid was not purple so I added some Modul 600. What will happen "IF" I added a small amount of Dot 4 to Dot 5?

That would be a bad day. They are totally incompatible.
Old Dot 5 fades depending on age . The test is to add a few drops of water to some of it in a small vial. if the water and fluid repel it is silicone if it mixes it is dot3 or 4 glycol.
OK, I just tried the "mix" and the results are in ... Car has about 3500 miles built in '04 so I'm taking a chance on saying it has the original brake fluid. It is clear. I added a few drops of it to some water and it mixed ... made the water cloudy but did not separate like oil would ... so I'm fairly confident the car had Dot 3 or 4 in it already.

Final test would be find a sacrificial object with paint and apply some of the brakefluid. If it eats the paint offit is dot 3 or 4 if no reaction then it is silicone.

Hello!
I would like to change my brake and clutch fluid.
The brake fluid looks like it is dot5 because it doesn‘t harm to paint, but it is clear colored.
Is it possible to flush the backdraft brake fluid with dot 4, because I would like to have just one sort of fluid in the clutch and brake system?
My car has the standard brake system with ate parts in it and it is from 2008.
Would be glad to get the right information.
