Default Canton Oil Thermostat?

Brian and Jay have installed a nice looking Oil Thermostat....I think is a Canton....( http://www.vintage-motorsports.com/gallery/BDR380/adz ) does this devices need any kind of manteinance? For filter replacing is neccesary to make something "special" or only remove old one and install the new one? Does oil in hoses pour out when filter is removed? Coul be a good idea to fill filter (with oil of course) before to install it? Is neccesary (or possible) to drain air after filter replacement?

Thanks

Alfonso

Yes it's canton. For maintaince, none. Just make sure you run the car hot enough for the thermostat to open ever once in a while.
Changing oil, yes you will get some oil leaking from the lines when you remove the filter, but not a great deal. Most people say fill the filter with oil before installing a new one.
Biggest problem is changing oil, with remote oil filter / oil cooler / canton thermostat & canton sump I am at ~12qt. But when changing oil the thermostat is closed (because oil is cold) so you can't get to the ~1.5 qt's that's the other side of the thermostat (lines and oil cooler). You can disconnect a line and use an oil vacuum pump, but it's not worth the effort in my opinion. If you have a 12qt system, and replace 10qt's every ~3k miles I think you are perfectly fine.

On this subject we are working with a company to develop a thermostat and remote filter mount all in one to reduce the number of lines/fittings etc. Hopefully done by end of summer.

Jay,
That sounds great, but with the thermostat built into the remote filter adapter, it may not allow oil to pass to the remote filter till the oil gets very hot. Is that the case or do they have another approach.

The oil would still pass through the filter, however the thermostat will determine if it goes to the oil cooler or back to the block first.

Also, it will allow a small amount of flow to constantly feed the cooler to reduce air gaps.

You guys may also want to consider a Mocal sandwich adapter with bypass. I goes right on the side of the block and then the filter on it. It has a thermosticaly controlled bypass that allows oil to go to cooler and then back to filter. Very compact and only $85. I needed a shorter filter so I use a mobil one high efficency/flow that is approx 2" shorter. Simplifies hoses, fittings and works great.
