ford Motor Racing red line
Any idea what rpm the ford motor racing engine redlines??...i have the 392...rated 430 hp and 450 torque....sputtering at ~5500 rpm

Sounds like a rev limiter is kicking in. What kind of ignition do you have and is there a rev limiter in the circuit somewhere?

My 392, out of the box from BDR ran REALLY rich and the timing was far from ideal. It ran fine but only topped out at a tad over 300HP at the wheels. I then installed Afr185 heads and right off the bat, it made upper 380's at the wheels. Then with a tune, it made 420 something if memory surves me correctly.
I would wager that about 60HP of that was all gained in the tune.
I would check into what rev chip you have and then take it to a dyno. Both drivability and power improvements will make it well worth the effort. MHO.

We had a local customer that found about 25-30 RWHP on the chassis dyno. He too had the Ford Racing 392. The carb was a Holley Street Avenger and most of the power came from jet changes with some more from timing adjustment.

Dirty air filter, air filter to small, fuel line to small, fuel pump to small, fuel filter to small or clogged, electric fuel pump mounted to high above gas tank.

thx for the insight...the motor only has 1300 miles..the air filter and such appear fine...not the gas because is has been going on since i got the car (800 miles)..i'm not smart enough to know if it is the chip (rev limiter)..but taking to my mechanic and maybe he can sort things out...thx....the motor hasnt been touched since Reg installed the motor and tranny..thx again

Two things that I found on my car at the Dyno;
The primary float level was way low.
The throttle springs were binding, not allowing full throttle.
Might not relate to your issue, but easy to check.

I'm not a pro or anything, but here's some stuff.
What ignition do you have? You may be hitting rev limit. The MSD 6AL has a rev limit chip if you have one of those. The little white deal with a number on it plugs into the side of the red rectangular shaped box.
If your car is dropping off in the higher gears and not in the lower you're probably running lean. Check your density altitude and let us know about were you are. Use this link.

Colder air, higher inHg, and dry air will require more fuel. More load takes more fuel also, thus the drop off in top gears. It is winter and I bet you're running lean.
Also If I run 110 leaded fuel in my 10.5 to 1 set up it will extinguish spark and blow unburnt fuel out the side pipes. I'm not sure of the specifics on my fuel though. It starts about 5500 rpm with the MSD 6AL ignition while having a .05 spark plug gap. 100 unleaded pulls like a mother up to 7000 rpm.
