Default After Market rims on BAckdraft

HEy guys/gals new guy here collecting info on these beautiful cars..Im trying to decide between the FFR and the Backdraft..right now Im leaning towards the Backdraft and need to know a few things. Its my understanding they use a BMW rear end. I need to know how I can put on aftermarket rims (Ford Bullits 18') instead of the stock rims. has anyone done this? if so whats needed. Next question how much power can these rears handle? thanks for your time...

Hey... Sounds familiar! Good to see you over here. A great resource. On the wheels if you are dead set on using them you can use billet adapters to pull it off (they need to be hubcentric, but it can be done).

The stock rears are holding upto and beyond 600+ ... you will break all sorts of other stuff before you break the diff

The BMW lug pattern is close to the Ford pattern but different. I had a set of track wheeks for the FFR that would not fit the BDR. If you are insistent on the Bullit wheels, which I happen to like, ( I have a set of 17s on a 67 Mustang coupe), you will need adaptors, which are highly suspect for any kind of track time. As far as power, I have had the car dynoed with 428RWHP, and two years of driving and several track events, no failure if the rear end, some other interesting mechanical issues, but the rear end has been fine. These cars are light which helps a lot.
Hope this answers some of your questions.
BTW if you are looking at buying a built car, look very carefully, and take someone with who is familiar with Cobras. I have seen some fantastic FFRs out there, also some scary pieces of work. BDRs are all factory assembled.
This is certainly NOT a FFR bash, but look carefully,

LOL..Im busted Jay!! I was slightly surprise to see you here but its good your down here in the "trenches" getting the info right from the source! Good to hear about the rear my 408ci will be putting some power out last thing I need is a busted rear..I hopefully will be able to buillt proof the rest..lol The FFR is my 2nd option when I go home on leave Im meeting with a local builder and checkin out his work but as it sits right now the BDR and Jays company is in the front running...there is a company in north ATL that Im driving to so I can view the bDR in person..Im sure I wont be disapointed! As far as the rims I bought them off a buddy and I think with the titanuim/black combo and these black with chrome lip bullits will set the car off nicely so yea they are a must..it wont be a track car more like a weekend warrior/show car..will these adaptors work for that type driving? with the occasional ass whoopin on those unsuspecting cars...lol

This thing is anything but gentle on the moving parts:



Those adapters are used in road race applications to increase track width, so they have some street cred... though YMMV.

beautiful!! But Im partial to sbc's lol cant help it have much respect for those motors though they make great power..um whats YMMV? and can you guys provide the adapters? I bring my rims save a few dollars on the purchase price??lol

personal preference..I like the bullits better than the rims the car comes with and imo it will look 10x better with a fat ass tire sitting on a nice rim that compliments the car...and Im thinking the 408 will be able to push it with vrey little effort...

Something else that comes to mind is backspacing. I remember from my FFR for 17 x 9s (different diameter and width)(94 to 04 Mustang Cobra R). Ford standard backspacing is 6" (5.95" front 6.42" rear). The newer stangs 05 to current are different. My wife's 07 backspacing is more than pre 05. SOOO to make a short story long, a lot depends on what year your Bullits are made to fit and what backspasing a BDR will need to look right. Jay may know the BDR backspacing off the top of his head. If you need it, let me know, my street wheels are off the car in the garage.

So is it the consensus that there are no "off the shelf" wheels that will fit a BDR? I'm considering putting one together for a race car and a couple of extra sets of "inexpensive" wheels would be nice. I don't want those big 'ol 15" Nascar looking tires on there either.

Jim, from what I understand, you are right. When I ordered the yellow car, I ordered a spare set of wheels, but 9 1/2" for the front, and I'm running 17" R compound tires. It seems to work well. Are you considering one of the lightweight BDR race cars?
Kinda funny, I've been doing some research on the Ford Spec Racers.

Mr. Lucky should be able to answer the backspacing question better than I can. He knows what works the best, especially for the tracking.
