Better Rear Shocks
Any one try out any other shocks for the rear of the car? I was wondering if the KYB shocks that they make for the VW would fit the same and work better. I'm just looking for a little better rebound when tracking the car.

Well, I got the new KYB Gas Adjust shocks in the car and they seem to work very well. It was about the simplest install in the world. Within 15 minutes I had them changed out.
I could tell the difference between the shocks when I depressed each of them to the ground when I had them out of the car. The KYB was slightly harder to push down and seemed to rebound a little quicker. I guess time will tell when I get them on the track in June. Easy upgrade for $34 each.

James
This sounds interesting and I want to upgrade mine as well.
Dumb question, do you have any model number available?
Thanks

KYBs are nice. Bilsteins are even better. But in either case it firms things up quite a bit. I think the standard shock is best all around for a cruiser.

From messing around with all the shocks, I can put them in order from softest to hardest:
Gabriels : Soft
KYB GR2 Standard: Medium
KYB Gas a Just: Medium-Firm
Bilsteins: Very Firm
Hope this helps,
James

I replaced my original rear shocks with Bilsteins and have been very happy with the performance and ride. The OEM shocks allowed for a lot of wheel hop with the open differential, while the Bilsteins hold the tires to the road. I also had some problems with the car "bottoming out" with the spring hitting in the lower bucket. That is no longer a problem either.

Rear shocks from a 1969 VW bug. Bilstein p/n B46-0034-H0 works, need to cut mounting sleeve on lower end.

I just installed the Bilstein p/n B46-0034-H0. It increased my ride heigth by about 1/2 inch, and they a firm. Have not tested if it resolved the wheel hop yet.

I officially put about 25 miles on the car yesterday with the new KYB Gas Adjust shocks and I am very happy with the ride. It did not seem tougher at all, but I did notice a significant reduction in wheel hop. The car launched great without any wheel hop on multiple occassions.
I am really looking forward to seeing if these shocks make a difference on the road course.

I guess you would need to use one of their universal shocks that have the same travel distance and extended length. Also, the bolts would have to line up as well.
Let us know if you find anything...

I replaced my rear Aldan shocks with QA-1's (twelve way adjustable) and the difference is remarkable.
I may be doing the same for the front.
Iv'e done quite a bit of work with my rear suspension. If you interested, check out my post "Rear suspension problem (Lone Star) and others"
Posted today, May 5th.
I think I have the problem's fixed, and need to up date my post.
It's level, rides a lot better and I'm very happy !

I just replaced the rear Bilsteins with KYB Gas-A-Just and I'm much happier with the KYB's for street driving. The Bilsteins are REALLY firm. If I go tracking I'll put the Bilsteins back on.
Cheers

I put the Bilsteins on about 300 miles ago...they are stiff, I think to stiff for normal street driving. And on choppy roads under hard acceleration in second gear the motor revs (tire spin) on the chop. Sledge...Got a KYB part number? are these VW unit also?
