Mallory Fuel Pump is dying. :(
Today I was heading out to pick up some bev's from Bev-Mo and noticed a rattling sound when I flipped both ignition and fuel pump switches. I flipped down the ignition and could hear a 'rattling' sound from the fuel pump. Went under and can feel the vibration of the rattling...
Question: rebuild or just buy a new one? It's a Mallory 140 and goes for about $219 at Summit Racing.

Steve:
The gauge is jumping around between 4-6psi, it's not stable like it should be (that's with the engine off).

The Mallorys are rebuildable, IIRC.
Or maybe it's just because you were going to BevMo.

It probably just needs new brushes. Cheap and easy to replace. Wiggle the wires right at the base where they enter into the top of the unit. If that affects output it is most likely the brushes.

correcto-mundo. I finally got the sucker apart; one brush is bottomed out on the spring that presses the brush towards the armature. The other has a good 1/8" left but its obvious the other brush is just "barely" touching:
I do need to relocate this thing; took me 1.5 hours to remove it because of the location I chose. If you look at my journal on this, it's located on the battery box behind the IRS pumpkin, but getting the 4 bolts off was a PITA since I have to remove the battery first, and since the car is now "completed", I had to improvise a way to hold the nut while I turned the bolt from below. Got it done but realized I wrapped the ground connection too far to reach (above the fuel tank) so I cut it so I can re-do it in a new and easier location (thinking behind the rear splash panel where getting to it will be much easier.
The only bad news is I have to make a new braided line to the remote filter but I still have a good 8 ft. of hose so I should be good... a pity since my original connection was a nice 6" connector.

Well, I spent New Years eve "day" replacing the bushings, the O-ring and gasket. Everything else seems fine so no need to change the strainer, springs, etc.
I've relocated the fuel pump behind the rear splash panel, extended the wiring to that location, and extended the fuel-filter hose to it can reach. I put electricity to the pump and it sound normal again.
The only niggly thing that stops me from completion is the tank-to-pump hose... it cannot reach the -8 fitting; what I need is a 90-degree 3/8 to AN-8 fitting to make this work but Goodies was closed by 1:00pm and PepBoys didn't have a 90-degree elbow.
So close and yet so far. But at least the pump is fixed.
