Top Gear American Style
I've been a (BBC) Top Gear fan for years, and just saw the first episode of the American series on the History channel instead of BBC. I'm still digesting the differences.
Just curious about the reactions of fellow Cobra drivers. What did you think?

Intresting show but I don't think they hit their target. It really is missing the British humor. That is what they could not dupicate.
My thoughts........

Ed...what channel is it on and what days. We have dish. The only one I could find was the BBC version on the search engine on Dish.

The "premier" episode aired on Sunday, 11/21, on the History Channel, and will be rebroadcast on Tuesday 11/23 in the evening - Says 9pm EST. The title is/was "Cobra Attack" and features a duel between a Viper and a Cobra attack helicopter. As they set up the bit they briefly showed and mentioned the Shelby Cobra and the value of an "original". As far as I know, all are on the History Channel. I agree about British humor lacking in the new show.

Alex Roy is an obvious choice: smart, sarcastic, and a total badass.

Side Note: The cobra (car) they showed was an HST Produced CSX 4000/6000 the daytona coupe was a Brock Series 1 from SPF. -
as for the show, -- fun not the British one, I like Tanner and Adam - the other guy reminds me of an college roommate.

Did they have automaker ads?
I figure the British one has part of its appeal is that they don't have ads from automakers thus don't have to kowtow to any one automaker and not knock their cars. Plus they have access to the latest Lamborghinis, Ferraris, etc. where American shows in the past have precious little access or at least can't beat them with a cane like the Brits. I think the Brits are more worldly when it comes to an overview--these are guys that pop over to every event on the Continent. We can't have a show that will match theirs unless we have equally well traveled bon vivants.

I agree.
Must admit however, that I have not seen the American Top Gear program yet, but the British version would be a tough act to follow. Not only do they have better access to European cars, but they have a broader view of the world market and quite a sense of adventure. The motorcycle trip through Vietnam or the trip to the North pole, are two that come to mind. The British sense of humor is a big part of the show as well ... Monty Python and Benny Hill, have a lot of influence to this day.
That being said, shows like American Chopper, Dirty Jobs or Deadliest Catch, while not car related, are American shows that the British would probably have a tough time trying to emulate.
All of these shows are original and that's a big part of their appeal.

I watched the first show, my thoughts are not unlike what has been posted. First, it is missing some humor for sure, and the whit that the UK show has is missing because you have to be of a certain age and experience to have it. You just have to have some class, coolness and silliness that a more experienced person would have. I am not even 40, and I feel like the guys on the USA version are kids. I cannot stand Tanner, I think he just lacks maturity and experience to pull any program off and maybe he actually can, but the perception is he is a "kid" and they are children playing with cars. I see Tanner and I cringe.
For this program to succeed, espescially on the History channel, it has to be a show that has cars, but a show that is clearly not about cars. This is a formula that the Brit car show has which keep everyone interested, yes, us car guys love it - but so can my wife, the in-laws and co-workers who do not care about cars at all. They laugh, they think its funny and I don't think this trio can pull it off. You need to place someone in the mix who really understands cars, but has the smart whit of crazy insane humor. A Chevy Chase who has a Jay Leno understanding of cars; and I don't see how this trio can pull it off espescially with the expectations of the Brit version being so high.
