SB-100, should I even bother this week?

Hi Guys

My backdraft cobra should be delivered in January, and since I'm off from work starting this Wednesday I was considering going to the DMV and securing a SB-100. Wondering if it might just be a waste of time given how late in the year we are.

I saw a post in early November stating that someone had secured SB-100 in the low #400's so there may be a few left. So my question to the forum is should I gamble and go down to the oakland DMV or am I wasting my time and should I wait until January?

(BTW any way to confirm availability before actually going to the DMV?)

First, congratulations on the new BDR! Where are you located in CA? If you already have your eye on an SB100 friendly/knowledgeable office, you might as well give it a shot before the end of the year. In the past, the numbers weren't distributed in sequence (don't know why), so #500 could be issued the first day and number 245 tomorrow.

I was at the Santa Clara DMV this past Wednesday (12/14) and there were still numbers available for 2011.

In the past some people would go down and acquire numerous SB100's, and sell them later on. DMV got hip to this and they are released throughout the year. It is my understanding from talking with guys who have obtained them of recent, it is not the problem getting them that it once was. From what I understand you should not have a problem.

Hi Guys and Thanks for the replies. I think I'll make my way down this week, I'm in Oakland but I've heard the San Jose DMV is SB 100 knowledgeable. Any recommendations as to which office near Oakland / Peidmont would be the most SB 100 "friendly"?

If you have the time and don't mind a bit of a drive, the Santa Clara DMV is very SB-100 / SPCNS knowledgeable. The key person to talk with is Jody, she knows the process inside and out and is easy to work with. Can't guarantee what days she works, but mid week, mid mornings seems to be a good time. Make an appointment (for registration) to save time waiting in line.

Maybe some of the other guys have recommendations for other Bay Area DMV offices familiar with the process.

If you don't have your Cobra yet, I don't think you can get an SB-100. If I remember correctly, you need to have the MSO (manufacturer's statement of origin) in hand before DMV will do anything.

I have the "title" or MSO in hand (Jay from Vintage Motorsports sent it over last week) as well as the receipts. The car is still in build mode but as I understand it if I have the requisite paperwork I should be able to secure a SB-100 (assuming they are available), correct?

The other way to look at it - is get there now and use a 2011 number as if they are NOT used by 12-31 then they go to waste. - make room for 2012 being a good year for SB100 and use the 2011 numbers !!!!

Congrats on the Backdraft,

There are numbers sitting there right now, Walnut Creek and Pleasanton DMV have knowledgeable people that know the SB100 process and are willing to guide you through the process.

The smog referees at the Los Positas JC in Dublin are also very good. When you get to the point of CHP inspection, the office in Dublin has really good people and CHP officers that has an SPF GT40. When you need a light/brake inspection there is a station on Portola that I have used in the past. All of these are close to where the BACC meets in Livermore every Saturday.

I would like to see your Backdraft up close and personal.

It wouldn't be such a horrible idea to get it out of the way if you could and hit the DMV on the 3rd. And you might want to pay the taxes on it before 2012.

When I did it, I showed up at 4AM. Since the DMV employee asked 'who is in line for SB100?', the guy who showed up minutes before opening (at the far end of the line) got right behind me in the SB100 line. No need to do the early thing, I'm just saying you might want to do it on a day that they have their SB100 bearings straight.

all right guys, based on your feedback I have made an appointment for tomorrow morning at the walnut creek DMV. I have my MSO (title of ownership), receipts and I prinited and completed the vehicle registration form (reg 343). I know I have to bring my check book, anything else or any last words of advice?

Always double check the paperwork that the DMV hands back to you so that: a) you get all your paperwork back, b) your name, your address and your car's info are 100% correct in the DMV's system, before leaving the DMV counter.

It goes without saying that honesty and kindness are always the best policy.

Hi Art,

We have managed to train the Walnut Creek DMV staff over the years. The SB100 process has specific steps but, none of them are complicated. Rob did make a good point, check your paper work before you leave the counter, the number will be assigned and then the paper work will arrive from Sacramento a week or so later.

The registration date will start the clock on your registration tomorrow when you write the check. Make sure you have separate paper work/receipts for the engine, transmission and the roller. In order for it to be considered a component vehicle they want to see that you did not buy a manufactered vehicle from a factory.

Don't sweat it......look forward to driving the new Back Draft. I am looking forward to meeting you seeing the new ride.

also, you mentioned that the "clock starts" on my registration when I write the check, not clear on what that means. I won't have the physical car until mid January so I need to also secure a temporary operating permit, correct?

You don't need the car, as long you have the MSO and your receipts. Hand everything to the DMV, pay your fees, and they'll give you your "to do" list. Brake and Light inspection, CHP, BAR, etc. Ask them for a 90 day temporary operating permit so you have time to take care of the inspections.

The CHP may or may not assign you a new VIN number and attached a plate to your car. The DMV will enter a temporary VIN in their system from your MSO. Make sure that the DMV updates their system with the VIN that the CHP assigns.

Once you get your TOP and have insurance, you can enjoy your car and chip away the inspections, CHP visit and finally the BAR to get your SB100 sticker. Good luck!

The paper work you get from Sacramento is what you take to the BAR (Smog Referee) and CHP for the one time check on your car, this paperwork has the SB100 number assigned to your car. You could call today and make the appointment for the CHP to inspect the car, they have always put a new VIN on my cars but, some people have had the experience of not having the VIN plate riveted on.

When you start the process and pay your money today this will be the month your registration starts. The temporary move permit will allow you to drive the car, you will need proof of insurance for the DMV and complete the other steps, this is what I meant by the clock starting.

After you finish all of the items on aforementionrd "To Do" list you take all back to the DMV, they hand you the plate and the title will follow in the mail.

Once you are through, you never have to smog the car and it will have the SB100 attached to it for the entire life of the vehicle.

At walnut creek DMV. Clerk is not friendly and claims they don't do SB100 until January. I asked her to kindly call sacramento. She went away for 5 minutes and came back and said Sacramento is closed. When I asked how come she said Sacramento doesn't do SB 100 until January. Now waiting for manager

Drive South to Pleasanton DMV, take the Hopyard exit off of 580. Ask for Colleen Chin, she is a manager there and used to work in Walnut Creek.

She is expert in SB100 and will help you big time.
