It’s too bad Dan Gurney or Jerry Grant weren’t feeling up to running her around the track for entertainment purposes. What a dirty shame!

There are no "wrong hands" in vintage racing. It's all about owners having fun. Those cars are worth so much that a $20k repair is only a small percentage of their value.

First off, it was Rob Walton (Walmart) driving the car. He is actually a very good driver who was running up at the front in third place. He has won several races at Monterey in the past. Something clearly happened that trigger him to go wide ( oil on the track or something).

Glad the driver is okay and has the means to fix it like new. And even given the first two truths, I still would have filled a swear jar several times over afterward and thrown a lot of tools (at a wall).

It happens in racing. I'd still rather see it on the track than in a dank museum. It'll be fixed and back on the track.
Glad the driver isn't hurt.

Actually, since Jerry Grant is no longer living, he couldn't very well feel up to driving the car. And the suggestion that the owner of the car somehow lacks the right to race it as and when he sees fit makes me wonder about your IQ.

A little touchy Ned... I didn’t know Jerry Grant passed away recently. I’ll edit my initial comment hoping it brings this thread back on the topic.
I’m sure we are all glad the driver/owner wasn’t injured. Hope to see 2286 repaired and race ready again real soon.

Also saw the crash at Laguna Seca. Hard to watch, but glad driver was okay. 41 origional Cobras on the track; many more in display. Incredible event!

Looking at the program, CSX 2286 was not listed, although Rob Walton is listed in Group 4A with a 1961 Ferrai 250 GT. He seemed ok after the accident, got out of the car, and walked to the wall and sat there ...

I admire the hell out of those guys, running original cars hard.
Really glad no one was hurt.

I was just explaining to a co-worker today that repairing a damaged one-of-a-kind racecar is a drop in the bucket for someone that can afford to own and race these vintage cars.
The damage isn't permanent: I'm sure some of you remember the flip-top Cobra getting messed up after #198 blew an oil line some time back. And, of course, sitting in the Shelby display was a pristine Flip-Top.
The other thing that occurred to me in looking around the Shelby display was that, for all the emphasis all of us here place on trying to replicate the original cars, even the originals sported newer technology---as observed with the Flip-Top Cobra with it's steel-braided lines and red and blue anodized fittings. I noticed many of the originals sporting newer technology.
I thought the mounting of the remote oil filter on the Flip-Top was pretty cool and clever.
Wow, Ron Walton owns one of the original Daytonas? Very cool!

Having driven Laguna several times that sure looks like the outside exit to turn 5. Note the bridge up the hill that is a brake marker for turn 6. Turn 5 is NOT a good place to loose your brakes. I was at the track and saw the car after the incident. Hurt badly but repairable.

Am I reading this right? Walton has both CSX2286 AND a 250GT?
I'm jealous...

He has and race ALL 3 of these cars this weekend: 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB, 1964 Ferrari 250 LM, and the Daytona Coupe CSX2286. He placed first with the 1961 Ferrari, second with the 64 Ferrari, and was in 3rd with the Daytona when it went off in the exit to turn 5.
