Default Road up to Alice's Warning

Went up to Alice's today from Saratoga. Got stuck having to drive a couple of miles on loose gravel. It was unavoidable and didn't know how long the zone was. It's long, I'd guess 2-3 miles, ending at the vista point.

Really peppered my below decks with stones.
I suggest you avoid that route for at least a couple of weeks.

Dave

I was behind Dave. I kept my distance but the rocks were flying everywhere.

Three big trucks passed me going the other way and one kicked up a rock and cracked my windshield. Fortunately, not any noticeable road rash on my car.

I would avoid Skyline for at least a month.

Doug, sorry to hear about your windshield. I just hate roads like that.

BTW, I would also avoid traveling on Junipera Serra behind Stanford between Page Mill and Alpine. PG&E is replacing gas pipes and the road is torn up and those trench plates make it a PITA.

Best way for the time being to get to Alice's is 280 then 84 and head up the hill.

Dave / Doug ... your cars definitely got hammered ... yikes !

Rodney ... thanks for the heads up on Junipera Serra. One of these days we need to get you out for a breakfast or lunch.

I took 280 route to Alice most of the time.....

Thanks for the warning !!!!

Hey, thanks for the warning !

I drove mine on saturday just for some errands around Cupertino and when I came home, I noticed a bunch of rock chips in the front. Whats the best way to take care of these rock chips after you notice them?

Thanks Dave. We are planning to ride the bikes this weekend and was thinking about that. NOT!! My son and I came back on Mines rd from Livermore one time. we hit the Santa Clara county line and they tar/graveled all the way to Mt. Hamilton. Took about three hours to get back!!

Doug, I have changed my windshield twice by myself. Hate it!!

Pilot, Tom one of the members bought me a small detail brush a while back from and art store. I put the car up on stands, put my glasses on, get a good light and touch them up one at a time. With the black it is hard to see where I have touched up the paint.

Hey, thanks Scott !

Any tips on some places in our (san jose/cupertino) area that would have these touch up pens? I dont know the color but it looks to be a cherry red of sorts. I guess with these, we just find something as close as possible?

The brush I gave Scott was purchased at Michaels Art Supplies (or similar name). There are many Michaels around. It is a very fine tip and doesn't have a ton of bristles. Many art supply stores should have something comparable. Mine is a #3650-4/0.

The brush was VERY expensive, but Scott is worth it.

Tom

Ps it is not a touch up pen. You must supply the paint.

I bought a 24 piece brush set from Michaels for about $10 about a year ago. This set had a large assortment of tips that works well for touching up spots. You may also want to pick up some Dupli-color Scratch Fix 2 in 1, NG SF 125 clear coat, depending on the paint you use. The Dupli-color clear seems to have worked out pretty well on my Dupont Chroma base paint.

Ed and I drove from 92 to Alice's for lunch today, Sunday. OMG - first we had to wait for 10-15 minutes at a flagman about half to Alices to let traffic flow the other way. They were actively paving the northbound lanes and gravel and tar was flying everywhere. To minimize rocks and tar, we limped into Alice's driving about 15 mph and that's when we weren't dodging construction trucks. I don't think the folks behind us were any too happy with our slow pace but WTF, damage was kept to a minimum.

The good news was that the weather was hot and the crowds plentiful. I don't know how things were on the road south of 84, but I'll bet there was a lot of northern gravel scattered along the way. It seems they are working just on weekends. 84 east was fine going home but we probably won't be going up there soon without an armored personnel carrier.

Yep, I finally found out the only negative (besides cost) of the AVON's. They pickup and sling gravel like a bead blaster.

Tom,
You should have followed us. When Dave posted that, we were planning a bike run with daughter and son-in-law. So I decided to go Mc Keen rd through Morgan Hill, to Watsonville rd over to 152. Dropped into Watsonville and stopped at Gizdich Ranch for a break then over to Capitola for lunch. Then came back old San Jose Ave to Summit rd then cut off on old Santa Cruz hwy around Lexington Reservoir. Excellent ride and weather.

I think this whole paving project is a conspiracy to get cars and motorcycles off of Skyline.

I'm not going back up there until the Spring.
