Default Cars to the Coast Trip

I am posting this on behalf of the organizer for this event Mike Rosenthal.

Cars to the Coast

ATTENTION DRIVING ENTHUSIASTS who own a car suitable for navigating twisting coastal and mountainous roads. ANNOUNCING "CARS TO THE COAST" COMING IN JUNE. For those of you who have participated in the Snakes to the Lake events (and still have a large grin on you face), you already know how much fun we had on those runs. For those of you who have been thinking of going but haven't, here's your chance. We expect a large contingent of Cobras but all makes and models of replicas and other sports cars are welcome.

OK, HERE ARE THE DETAILS. This two day tour (not a timed rally or otherwise competitive event) up the spectacular California coast line, through heavily wooded hills on nicely curved roads is conducted on paved, predominately well maintained, two lane roads. It is scheduled for JUNE 8TH and 9TH with on overnight stay in Fort Bragg and is about 400-500 miles in length with about half the mileage each day.

The main purpose is to enjoy the driving experience of your high performance sports car and the comaraderie of the other participants. We are planning a starting point in Marin County (probably Novato) on Saturday June 8th and will travel up Highway 1 to Fort Bragg. Saturday's drive will be a little on the laid back side because most of Highway 1 is a solid double yellow line, but you can count on some wonderful vistas at just about every turn in the road. Lunch both days will be a bring your own "bag lunch" and Saturdays lunch spot will be at Fort Ross State Park. There is a $2.00 per vehicle entry and the parking lot is very large. There is a very short hike to a nice picnic area with an ocean view and historic Fort Ross is also nearby and is open to tour. Sunday's drive will be a more spirited drive a little farther North on Highway 1 to Leggett and then back inland to a finish point in the Napa Valley. A Safeway with a deli is close to the Harbor LIte Lodge and we will stop there on the way out of town to get lunch supplies in preparation for a lunch stop at beautiful Lake Mendocino.

Fort Bragg is a really quaint coastal town, but is large enough to offer all the required amenities. The tour is taking place at a time of year when early reservations for lodging are highly recommended to insure that you can secure a room. So. if the tour sounds like something you might like to do, I would advise calling soon to make a reservation for lodging. Last year we picked a weekend when alot of motorcycles were making a "Run to the Redwoods" ...like about 5 to 7,000 motorcycles! I think we are on a different weekend this year.

The choice of lodging is left to you and for your convemience here are some lodging options in Fort Bragg: (most of us last year stayed at the Harbor Lite Lodge and found it quite adequate.)

HARBOR LITE LODGE, 120 North Harbor Drive, 800-643-2700 $75-140
SEABIRD LODGE, 1919 South Street, 800-345-0022 $75-100
VISTA MANOR LODGE, 1100 N Main Street, 800-821-9498 $60-100

There are several other chioces for lodging, but by my survey (albeit a very short one) the Harbor Lite appeared to be the best all around choice. Parking is off of the main street in the center of the complex and they offer a complimentary breakfast bar. A Perkos is right across the street and two good restaurants for dinner area also pretty close. The Seabird Lodge is right across the street and would be my second choice for lodging.

To help with the planning, please drop me a note or email as soon as you can if you plan to participate. My email address is mrosenthal@marincounty.net

More details will be sent before the trip to those who RSVP. Until then, Happy Trails!!

May I suggest that you consider a pit stop at Patterson's Pub in Mendocino. Small but very fun place.

We took this trip last year as the first trip in our then just completed Cobra. Had a great time, good weather, great route planned by Mike Rosenthal & wife (spirited driving and some great vistas and photo op's), Plenty of pit stops for the co-pilot and great Cobra folks to get to meet. We are planning on making the trip again this year.
