Default lnsurance Grundy

Does anyone have insurance with Grundy?

I got a quote and it is very good but I'm concerned about the other than car event use. I just spoke to Grundy and they said Sunday drives ok even taking car out on other days. Over nite trips on car events ok. Just so long as you don't take it to 7/eleven etc.

Any thoughts?

Stan

Wink Grundy...

Sam...I'm with Grundy on my SPF. So far, no problems...I had heard they weren't taking on new Cobra policies, due to the high nature of accidents in the first few months of ownership. ONe of my local buddies, a new SPF owner, contacted them and they said they weren't taking on new Cobras, you had to own it for at least two years before they'd even talk to you. Grundy said their statistics showed most accidents occur during the second year of ownership....the first year, most owners are too scared of the power and messing up their baby (don't we all understand that!, but during the second year, owners get cocky and think they can handle a 90" wheelbase with in excess of 500 bhp - WRONG!

Anyway, my policy reads pretty much the same...no to/from work, grocery store, errands, what ever. Only to/from car shows, cruises, club events, etc. My agent said the policy was limited to 3000 miles a year, but I can find no mention of this stipulation in the policy anywhere, and I've read it twice specifically looking for that caveat....couldn't find it. So far, even the 3K/year hasn't been a problem as I just don't drive my car THAT much....I've only got 4300 on it in 2+ years of ownership...so that hasn't been a problem so far as I'm concerned.

Even though the policy specifically mentions I can only drive the car to/from car shows, cruises, club events and the like....funny, there seems to be either a car show, cruise, or club event that just happens to coincide with every pretty afternoon in the year...ain't it funny...?

Bottom line, there are some caveats, just understand them and make your choices based on how these may affect your life. So far, I've not found any of these restrictions to be a problem.

Hope this helps....good luck!

Stan,

Do they have something against 7/Eleven?

If so just go to another market

The insurance company wants the car used in ways that keep it away from harm. Shopping districts and parking lots are areas of concern because of volume of traffic.

You should ask them if it is ok to go to a show that is held in a 7/Eleven parking lot?

Why don't you just stick it on the policy with your other cars? I did and I drive mine to restaurants, my office, and where ever else I want. I have no mileage restriction and if it gets whacked or stolen I can get another one. I have an agreed upon value which is equal to what it cost. It's not like they aren't being made any more........

I'm currently with Parish (until February), Grundy would not answer my phone calls or E-Mails. I think everybody is getting out of the Cobra Insurance business.

What is it about 2,400 pound cars with 500+ HP and aggressive drivers that scares them?

I insured mine on my regular policy and the agent had no problem with it being a Cobra. He thought it was neat and lobbied for a ride in it! In my case, I was restricted to 5,000 miles per year which was no big deal. For me 2,500 to 3,000 was tops anyway.

Unless I'm mistaken, Grundy does NOT provide liability coverage. Only comp and collision or theft. If this is correct, you still have to somehow get liability coverage on the car.

Let's face it. If anyone piles up one of these toys seriously, his heirs will have to deal with it.

All of us have a little jackass in them that can come out and make us do really stupid things behind the wheel. That's the part of our personalities that made us Cobra owners in the first place. We can only hope we and/or others won't bite the big one doing it. That's what the insurance companies already know about us before we walk in their doors. The numbers don't lie.....we do......to ourselves..... about our driving intentions.

I'm a perfect example. Even in the family flivver, I get POed at tailgaters and am not a bit bashful about giving the SOB's a good shot of the brakes to back them off. Some think it's funny and get even closer. Those are the horse's arses that get you hot under the collar and encourage dumb driving if you let them. In a Cobra? Not if you value your life and your car....not to mention the tickets.

Alpha personalities own Cobras and other high profile super cars. More often than not, the common sense and driving skills don't match up well with the car's potential for disaster......hence insurance troubles. We just have to live with it and encourage other owners to quit taking chances. If that would happen (not likely IMHO) the rates would eventually drop.

A Snake...grundy DOES provide liability coverage !! it might vary by state as many insurance co's do different things in different states due to unique state specific insurance laws, but they got it in Michigan. a homeowners umbrella liability policy can always increase liability coverage beyond their max if so desired.

also, re other comments. i have friends who recently got policies from them ( w/in last couple of mos) and friends who got denied by them...variables were apparently due to different driving records ,teen agers w/o their own cars to drive, age, ownership experience etc. maybe it depends who answers when ya call in ? dunno...seems strange to see folks say they got it and others saying no way....but it is getting tougher and tougher to get these toys insured.

I have State Farm and they restrict it to a principal driver between 50-74 and nobody under 25 (no-brainer)!! Also restrict it to 7500 miles per year...I do 4000 or so...maybe!

Best part is premium is only $673.00 per year with an agreed value of $ 35K!!!

I have my SPF insured with Bauer in SoCal. Stated replacement value of $65K. "0" deductible, no one under 25 can drive, must be in locked garage, not for commute use, 5K miles per year. All this for $730 per year

I have unlimited mileage, the aforementioned value, and max coverage on liability, medical etc. I have $250 ded on the collision. I must keep it in a garage at my home as well. Premium is about 1100 a year on top of the others. This is with Allstate. Oh and A Snake - lighten up.

The Grundy quote is for liability (bodily injury and Property Damage including med pay and un insured) 300k. this can be raised to 500 for umbrella policies.

Comp and collision value 55k

Green Menace,

Up your deductible to $500 or $1000 and you'll probably pay half that amount....

Check it out....

I got my LS427 insured through State Farm Insurance (California). It wasn't cheap ($1200 annual) and I had to jump through some hoops (appraisal, safety inspection, photos) but there are no restrictions of any kind and a agreed upon price of $50K It is insure like the rest of my fleet, uninsured motorist, liability, comprehensive etc, etc, and road side service. State Farm will insure Cobras in California. I think there was a restriction on the drivers age.

I'm going with
Barlow. WE talked about the Grundy quote and he had received a notice that they were not insuring Cobras. Again I also thought the price was too good. Barlow used to write with Grundy.

Hi Stan,

I have a friend in the San Jose area who just purchased a shelby gt 350. He is looking for insurance. Can you recommend a carrier?

Thanks in advance, John Maresy

jmarsey, any of the major classic car insurers should handle a gt 350 at attractively discounted rates : grundy, hagerty, jc taylor , parish heacock and others whose names now escape me. the cobra replica roadsters, thats another story. but shelby gt 350's , should not be a problem. make sure he gets AGREED VALUE only. bill

jmarsey;

I have my 65 Fastback GT-350 (look-a-like) with Condon & Skelly, great coverage at a very reasonable price, agreed on value. Been with them since 1996, about two or three years ago when I got my yearly premium notice in the mail, they gave me a 10% discount for not having ever made a claim!!!!!!!!!Ever since I get the 10% discount and hope I never have to make a claim.... I checked with a few others back then and C & S seemed to have the best rates for the coverage....

Premium is based on agreed on value,so much per thousand dollars of value, had no trouble insuring my car for the amount I asked for.....

Read the fine print carefully. I was very happy with my Grundy quote, agreed value, etc.

The fine print:

ONLY covered to and from a "show" and while in the "show". NOT covered driving to work, for milk, errands, etc.

This changed the quoted amount a LOT (or as Turk would say, ALOT).
