ANNOUNCING "COBRA’s TO THE COAST" IS COMING JULY.12/13
For those of you who have participated in the Snakes to the Lake events, you already know how much fun we had on those runs. For those of you who have been thinking of going on a run,but haven't, here's your chance.
OK, HERE ARE THE DETAILS. This two day tour (not a timed rally or otherwise competitive event) up the spectacular California coast line, through heavily wooded hills on nicely curved roads is conducted on paved, predominately well maintained, two lane roads. It is scheduled for JULY 12TH and 13TH with on overnight stay in Fort Bragg and is about 400-500 miles in length with about half the mileage each day.
The main purpose is to enjoy the driving experience of your high performance sports car and the camaraderie of the other participants. We are planning a starting point in Marin County (probably Novato) on Saturday July 12th and will travel up Highway 1 to Fort Bragg. Saturday's drive will be a little on the laid back side because most of Highway 1 is a solid double yellow line, but you can count on some wonderful vistas at just about every turn in the road. Lunch both days will be a bring your own "bag lunch" and Saturdays lunch spot will be at Fort Ross State Park. There is a $2.00 per vehicle entry and the parking lot is very large. There is a very short hike to a nice picnic area with an ocean view and historic Fort Ross is also nearby and is open to tour. The first day ends and about 4:00 in Ft. Bragg where everyone is on their own to sample any of the many fine sea food or other restaurants in town (a list of options will be provided). Sunday's drive will be a more spirited drive on Highway 20 to Lake Mendocino for a picnic and then back inland to a finish point in the Napa Valley. A Safeway with a deli is close to the Harbor Lite Lodge & Super 8 and we will stop there on the way out of town to get lunch supplies in preparation for the lunch stop at beautiful Lake Mendocino.
Fort Bragg is a really quaint coastal town, but is large enough to offer all the required amenities. The tour is taking place at a time of year when early reservations for lodging are highly recommended to insure that you can secure a room. So. if the tour sounds like something you might like to do, I would advise calling soon to make a reservation for lodging.
The choice of lodging is left to you and for your convenience here are some lodging options in Fort Bragg: (most of us last year stayed at the Harbor Lite Lodge and found it quite adequate.)
Where To Stay
Suggestions:
SUPER 8 888 S. Main, Phone: (800) 206-9833 $69-$89 (mention that you have AAA even if you don't, I was told they don't check and you'll receive a 10% discount!!)
HARBOR LITE LODGE, 120 North Harbor Drive, 800-643-2700 $81/courtyard/parking view, $92 harbor view mention that you are with the Bay area Cobra Club Cobra event and receive a 10% discount on the above rates
NOTE: Harbor Lite offers a spectacular view of the Harbor and ocean from some rooms and offers protected parking HOWEVER, THE ROOMS THAT ARE AVAILABLE FOR SINGLE NIGHTS ARE LOCATED NEARER THE HIGHWAY AND MAY BE A BIT NOISY ALSO THERE IS BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION NEAR BY AND ITS UNUSUAL BUT CAL-TRANS COULD DECIDE TO WORK
There are several other choices for lodging, but from past survey's the Harbor Lite appeared to be one of the best all around choice's ( however, see the note above). Parking is off of the main street in the center of the complex and they offer a complimentary breakfast bar. Super 8 is right across the street and is a good alternate choice for lodging. A Perkos is right across the street (in front of the Super 8) and good restaurants for dinner area also pretty close.
