Own a CSX Cobra for around 60K
They didn't have the South AFrican roller on display but for 39,999 for a complete roller with CSX number it seems to be a fair price. Unfortunately the local dealer wasn't forcoming on detailed information other than CAV was going to produce the cars. I guess we all know these cars are not investments but this has to change the market. This reminds me when Contemporary offered a lesser optioned roller.
Interesting....very interesting...

anyone seen the shape of this cobra. Is it the same body as the glass CSX or is it the CAV body?

They didn't have any on display and the rep was hesitant to really say anything about the car. A cobra is really a simple car to make and the quality of the CAV 40 is really very nice. I would guess that if CAV is able to do the Cobra that it will be a very nice car.
Which cobra would you buy for 60k complete?

"A cobra is a really simple car to make"
Well don't let David K hear you say that!
I may have been gone for a few months... (Let me get this straight -Turk has a Porsche Turbo now?)
But there's a huge sliding scale of quality I'm trying to figure out what EXACTLY you're getting besides a CSX number. There are a few very high quality Cobras out there and Shelby made one of them in Nevada. That (to me) was the attraction. If one is getting a CAV (as nice as they are) with a CSX number well that's a very different car than what they've been selling. I'm just trying to cut through the hype and that's always a bit tough when Carrol Shelby is around.

I don't think they are going to make the effort to dupe even the Nev cars. I was surprised the rep wasn't more excited about the new cars. I sensed he had some reservations about this change.
I think it would be easier to just sell the CSX plate for x dollars.
I guess we will have to wait and see if they can deliver the cars and then get them registered. To sell 75 cars in two days is verynice but can they deliver. The story continues....

If I was the dealer you referred to as the "rep" I wouldn't be too excited about the new car either.
When a manufacturer introduces a price leader , like Toyota Tercel, Honda Civic, Geo Metro, the salespeople, (in this case the dealers) have such a small margin of profit, the car gets treated like a step child.
Doesn't mean it is not good for the public, nor does it mean it is not good for the manufacturer. Just not very profitable for the seller.
Hence the indifference.

There was a lot of buzz around the Shelby American booth at the Monterey Historic Auto races this last weekend regarding this new offering from Shelby. This is very exciting news. They offered a $39k price point as a Historics introductory price promotion, but said that the price will likely increase by "$2k to $3k". This is for a painted roller, less engine & drive train. There was a great deal of interest, and I had to wait my turn to talk to the sales representative. I'm certainly going to look into it. The sales rep is also going to send me some info on the Shelby aluminum 427 FE. This makes a "genuine" Shelby Cobra a real posibility for me, as opposed to being relegated to the "pipe dream" category.
Another interesting note: I saw a Superformance Daytona parked with Shelby American's trailer. It looked really nice, but I was a little surprised to see it parked with Shelby's group. It had a "Peter Brock" emblem on it.
By the way, the Monterey Historics were a blast. I got to see over 75 Cobras --- many of them genuine --- some originals, and some GT-40's. Dick Smith was there in 198, and he blew an oil line approaching turn eleven.
By the way, when Dick Smith hit 198-1/2 mph back in the sixties, that was in a Daytona, right?
I was very impressed by a couple of black Lister-Corvettes. Loud and Lovely.
What a weekend!!!

Dick Smith was driving a Cobra, not a Coupe, when he set the record you refer to.
Rumor has it the SPF Coupe at The Historics was asked to leave the paddock area, hmmmm, wonder what the story there is?

i think you might be mistaken on the coupe being parked with the shelby group area. i too was at the historics and saw that it spent it's time in the superformance booth with the white superformance 427.

as far as dick smith's 427 cobra it created a very big mess at turn 11 (dumped oil) which nearly looked like a rich man's demolition derby. regretfully damaged in this show was ken mile's (light weight) flip top cobra, i'm not sure who else came out of this with damage though.

Nope. The coupe was indeed in the paddock parked right in front of the Shelby American trailer, about four cars down from Dick Smith's #198. At least it was parked there on Saturday morning at about 11 a.m. It might have been moved over to the SPF booth later, as mentioned in Excaliber's email response above.
Damn, the flip-top Cobra took a beating in that mess? I was at the cork screw, so I missed all the action. That is truly a one-of-a-kind car, the only one of it's type. What a heart break that must have been to bang that up.

Dick Smith and Shelby display were no less than a quarter mile apart.
A trailer marked Shelby American was parked in the Paddock area. There were some parked everywhere.
The Shelby display was across the Bentley and BMW and the other manufacturers.
I am certain you are mistaken.

It is hard to believe that the Shelby products are so well designed and built when the company can't even provide any "real" information about the CAV Cobra, hell they are selling a car that you don't even get to see a picture of it. I think one would be a fool to buy ANY car not knowing anything about the specifications.

Turk, did I say the Shelby _display_? No. I think you need to read what I write more carefully. The Superformance coupe was indeed right in front of a Shelby trailer in the paddock area no further than 100' from #198.
You may be thinking I was referring to the Shelby trailer over in the vendor area near the BMW tent, which I am not. The Shelby American trailer I am referring to was _right_in_the_paddock_area_, less than 100' from #198. And right in front of this Shelby American trailer was a blue Daytona with a Superformance sticker across the top of the windshield.
I know what I saw.

I think it was a Jamonian comment about the SPF Coupe being asked to leave the paddock area. I can understand why that would be a good move. With so much "real" stuff around, cuts down on the confusion of whats real and what isn't.
Heck, WE can barely deal with the issue of "real" vs "un-real", . "Un-real" would be applicable to what some of them boys down under are doing with their Cobras. There wild men I tell you!

DiKing,
who are you gonna believe? Me, or your lying eyes?
You are right, you did NOT say "Shelby _display_".
Neither did I.
What you DID say was"Superformance Daytona parked with Shelby American's trailer".
It sounded like you were a little suprised to see it there. That gave me and obviously others the impression the trailer belonged to Shelby American.
That is what the " 's " meant to me.
I guess the trailer you are speaking of belonged to other Shelby owners. I didn't see the surprising part in that.
No biggie.
Last year there was an ERA parked at Shelby Ameican display at SAAC in Southern California. They don't seem to be too picky who parks near them.
I am trying to run a little interference for the Las Vegas Boys.
They are NOT as bad as some make them out to be. It is US the CSX owners that do it for them.

CSX Roller
I also met the Shelby people at their Laguna Seca stand. They are trying to compete with Superformance and are offering, for only 30 days, a special price, little higher than SP for a fibreglass roller, same basis as SP. You need engine/transmission. Rolling chassis will be made in Cape Town, South Africa, by CAV plant.
In other words the only difference will be the CSX chassis number.
This is private enterprise at work.

As I will not be ready to actually buy a car within the next 30 days, I was wondering what the quoted price will go up to after the initial period?
Does anyone know?
Regards,
Keith
