CA registration: when the 500#'s are gone, what can you do??
The 500 SB100 #'s are gone for this year. The DMV says I can still register it for the year it was built (2001) NOT. I can't even get a 10 day temp, because you have to "begin" the reg process to get that. It is reg in CO , but they don't care. Anyone have any ideas, thanks. Mark

Mark,
Congrats on your new baby.
Your going to have to wait till 2004 unless they let you reg as it was in CO
1965? then sb100 in january. I don't think there is any other way.
curtis
FYI: sb1578 was a bill to strike the word 'Initial' from sb100 so that people could/can rereg their cars every year OR for others who bring them in from other states that have already been reg. The latter count toward the 500 numbers.

You can choose to smog based on the year your engine block was manufactured without SB100. Other than that, or waiting until 2004, the only other thing you can do is make it pass smog.

Having been thru the wringer on sb100 and sb1578, you do not have any options available other than those pointed out by the members earlier.
Just a word of caution... don't slip out for a little drive and get caught by the local law enforcement. It won't be worth it. Disconnect the battery and let her set until 1-1-04. I had to wait for 13 months to drive my cobra. Yea, it was worth the wait!!

It was reg in CO as a 2001 "kit" so I don't think that will help. If I wait 'till Jan are they going to tag me for not reg in the 20-30 day you usually have. I think registering under the year of the engine is a part of the SB100 process, which I can't do now. What happens if I drive and get cited???

Hey Mark,
Just a quick word of advice...
I strongly suggest that you not discuss registration and titling issues on a public forum. Since you are in SJ, you are a short drive from our Saturday Morning Breakfast gatherings in Dublin - if you haven't come for breakfast yet, then please consider this an open invitation. The topic of registration and titling is always a hot topic at Breakfast, and you might find that people are more willing to discuss it openly in a face to face manner, than in a public forum.
Hope this helps,
Randy R...

I made an appointment w/DMV a couple of months ago to get into the gueue for '04 - nada! You have to wait until Jan. '04. Fees, if paid, do NOT apply after the year paid. They wouldn't take my money?!? You would think w/the current budget crisis they would take any and all fees, for this year and apply/carry over to next year! Ah, California poliprick$.

This is the same state that will give unlimited number of legal driver's licenses to Illegals.....
The tax payer who has thousands invested in his hobby, his car, his Hot Rod will have to be limited to 500. We have room for thousands of others to use the highways and our schools, our medical systems, and we the tax payer can't drive our cars that were legally obtained, bought or built.
500. That is it. There is no room for California for number 501 and up.
That is the TOTAL number of privileged few who will be allowed to drive on our highways, for a state the size of California.
Isn't that a doozy?
There will be many many cars in this state very very soon with out of state plates. You wait and see. I for one will have to register my own car to my address at my Summer home in Atlanta or my Winter cabin in Wyoming.
This makes me sick to my stomach.
You just wait and see. Come January 10th, there won't be a damn number left to get. The 500 will be gone that fast.
I know I am repeating myself from a previous post, but the folks who have not been able to register their cars since the last number was used up this year are all waiting for next year.
Then there are the folks who are trying to do the right thing and re-register their cars to comply.
There is also the people who took advantage of the NOW closed loop of the past.
It is going to be a zoo, come January 1st. 2004.
Unless Arnold gets elected and makes this one of his top priorities (which I doubt seriously) we are all in trouble.
What a shame. What a joke.
Worst part of it is you will pay triple what we currently pay to get the cars registered in this wonderful place.
To think that after waiting for 6 months to get a legal spot on the registration lottery, you could be in line and be told "I'm sorry sir, but you have to wait until 2005, you were number 501"
Only to find out later that number 500 was issued to an illegal alien and his custom, home made low-rider and he is now free to roam the streets of Los Angeles in his new ride with his new LEGAL driver's license without insurance.

No, the ability to smog according to the engine block year of manufacture existed well before SB100 was ever passed. I'm not aware of SB100 superceding this ability (I could be wrong).
Status of your registration in CO doesn't mean anything to the CA DMV, unfortunately.

mr bruce,
I am afraid you are right!
I will have three illegal aliens hired and in DMW lines on my behalf in three different DMW locationsMidnight december 31st 2003.
Kind a like getting playoff tickets.
Thank God for Illegals!!
When the people show up on January 5th. 10th or even in Februaly and are told they CAN'T register their cars until 2005 , maybe there will be another uproar in California.
That is the way we do things here. We don't see things coming. We go like sheep and then fight like hell after we are affected by our actions or inactions.

I will be on line 4:30AM on Jan 2nd here in Poway, CA. I guess the tension is already building in me as I get more and more tense everytime we talk about this issue. I for one may end up doing the same thing, registering my car to my other residence...... I don't want to but may have to... I am not going to have a 40K boat anchor sitting in my garage....
Do we think they are going to be gone the first day?

No they won't be gone the first day.
DMW will be closed on New Year's Day.
They will probably be gone by Friday the 2nd.

Here's the way I see it...
Come Jan 2nd, in excess of 500 people with be standing at the DMV counter in hundreds of different DMV offices across California, all talking to a DMV clerk about getting one of those covetted SB100 Sequence Numbers. The conversation is gonna go something like this:
Tax Payer: Good Morning, I'm here to acquire an SB100 Sequence Number, please.
DMV Clerk: Ok. Please excuse me while I call Sacramento for that.
About 20 minutes pass, and the DMV returns to the Tax Payer.
Tax Payer: Well? What's my Sequence Number?
DMV Clerk: Sorry sir, but every time I called the Sacramento SB100 Sequence Number GRAND POOBAH to get your Sequence Number, all I got was a busy signal. I tried dozens of times, and I just couldn't get through.
Tax Payer: Yikes! Can you please keep trying? I can only imagine that within the next few hours, all of those Sequence Numbers will be gone. Please help me. I'm desperate. I can't wait another year!
DMV Clerk: I appreciate your pain, but I'm only allowed to spend 20 minutes calling Sacramento for an SB100 Sequence Number. You'll have to make another appointment with us, in order for another DMV clerk to call the Sacramento SB100 Sequence Number GRAND POOBAH. Sorry, there's nothing more I can do today. Who's next in line?
Guys, this system of Sequential numbers being provided by someone in Sacramento won't scale to meet the "parallel processing" needs come 8am on Jan 2nd. It's gonna be like teenagers calling the radio station to be the 9th caller for free concert tickets - it's just a kcufing mess.
Good luck,
Randy R...

The dedication to a Cobra requires you buy\build\commision it first, then worry about how to license it second.
......I thought everybody knew that. LOL

Remember that Cobras were being legally registered before SB100, don't despair.

Agreed. As I understand it, one can still title a Cobra Replica by the year of the block. This works if one's block is pre-smog, however if one has a new crate motor, it may be a bit more difficult...
YMMV,

That is a good question does SB100 supercede all prior ways of registering? I for this reason I built a 69 351W. So I should be good either way... who can answer this, I am going to give a call to DMV and see what they says about it........
One way or the other I will be online 4:30AM on Jan 2nd.... no way I am letting this one go...
