Smile Warm day, winding road and.....Damn!

So I am driving back from a show and shine up in Cameron Park this afternoon along some of the back roads and really enjoying the car, the road, the weather. Just an all around good weekend when I hear this slight rattle on my side of the car. I have heard this noise before. I look over the door and sure enough, the exhaust hanger broke. So I guess I know what I am doing tomorow.

I fixed it up this morning. Pulled the pipe off, welded the hanger back up, quick shot of high temp paint and hung it back on the car in under an hour. The plan for a winter project is to pull both pipes off and reinforce the hangers then send the pipes out for ceramic coating. I knew the sound because the other side had broken a few months back in the same place.

Default inspect the engine mounts

Tinker51,
You might want to inspect your engine mounts. If the engine is allowed to flop from side to side with throttle application, this will place undue stress on the side pipe brackets causing them to fracture.
The engine torque combined with weak engine mounts could be the root of the side pipe bracket breakage.
Also, if you are using a "t"sump oil pan, inspect it closely for signs of cracking around welds and welded in bungs, the side of the oil pan might have made contact with the frame rails. Hope this helps. Rod

I need my sde pipes welded too. Can I stop by?
Where exactly are you located in relation to I-80 ans Cameron Park?
Do you have a Tig ir a Mig welder?

Turk,
I am down in the SF east bay. I was just visiting Cameron Park. I have to admit here that I weld about as well as I spit (I could never be a professional baseball player because I can't spit for sh*t) I took the car to a friend's house and welded them with LOTS of coaching. He has both MIG and TIG, we MIG'd them. If you look at the pipes on an SPF car you will see a slight crease in the support bracket where the two speaders that attatch to the pipe come together and head under the car as a single piece. My guess is the crease is caused by a brake used to bend the metal to shape. Problem is the brackets break at the crease. Both sides on my car broke in exactly the same place. As others have pointed out I might have engine mount issues too. I will investigate this next week when I have some free time.

This has been a common problem with a lot of SPF's....I've had both of mine break, one twice! There appeared to be a problem with some of the pipes where they were welded. The problem was pretty prevalent in cars in the 700 series. The metal appeared to have been overheated and it crystalized where they were welded. SPF has reinforced the rear mounting brackets in their newer cars, but I can't tell you the car number when they began this practice.

Are you a SCOF member? If so, there are some pictures posted in one of our members albums of a re-inforcing modification he made to his pipe to alleviate this problem. I've made the same modification after one of my brackets broke the second time. So far, it appears to be a good fix.

Also, if you're running the original engine mounts made of rubber, you'll continue to have problems with these brackets. All of the rubber mounts are now being made in India, and ... bless their little hearts ... they have a completely different idea of what a 'Cobra' really is... These mounts are crap...period. Olthoff Racing has designed and sells a poly-urethane engine mount that really limits engine movement caused by torque. They really make a huge difference, and so far, this has helped to solve the broken side pipe mounts. You can reach Olthoff Racing at 800/297-6253.
