Default SPF crash at Thunderhill

All

One of our guys crashed hard in turn 9 at Thunderhill, the very fast blind turn at the top of the rise at the back of the track. Reports indicate that the car rolled multiple times and was completely destroyed. The driver was found to have a concussion and a broken arm and was removed to hospital in what was reported to be "Lucky as Hell" condition.
Do any of you know who it was? I would like to offer the support and good wishes of us all and hope for a speedy recovery.. The car was yellow with white stripes, our tax guy likes to open track, as does Scott...

I just talked to a friend who races at Thunderhill and he was at Sears Point and asked if it was Scott. Rich has a blue Daytona Coupe that he races. He also wrecked on the last race Sunday with just 3 laps left and isn't real happy but wasn't hurt. Hope whoever this was recovers quickly.

All,

I have confirmed that it was in fact Lew Comerford, aka Lew the Taxman who was injured over the weekend. I am sure that I am joined by everyone in wishing Lew a speedy recovery and am saddened that his beloved car has been destroyed... Also if there is anything I might offer in the way of favours, ask and they will be granted.

Post Map of Thunderhill

Gentlemen,

I am saddened to hear that there was another set of Cobra crashes at Thunderhill. This is a great but deceiving, 15-turn, 3-mile track that has several places where a loss of traction can occur.

Turn 9 is one where you climb up toward a blind crest before dropping down the other side into a sharp set of left turns.

It isn't the off camber turn, that one always scared me some, but looks deceivingly easy at first until you fly over the top, and can go airborne even! Here's a link to the map:
http://www.thunderhill.com/IMAGES/NEWTrackmap1.jpg

I'm not sure how his arm was broken, but it it possible that his hand flew up as the car rolled over. This is a common problem with open cockpit cars and has led to the development of arm restraints to keep our arms from flying around in a roll over.

Was anyone there who knows more about what might have caused the injuries? I only ask so that we can all learn from this accident and can suitably protect ourselves should it happen to others.

My regards to Lew and his family. I'm glad to hear that it he will be OK once his arm heals and probably once his Cobra is fixed/salvaged/replaced and he is back in the seat again.

All the best,

Randy - destroyed is the operative word here - i.e. not fixable....

Lew,
Get well soon.
I was scared that something like this might happen to me that is why I am club racing one of the safest race cars out there. A 1999 Ford Taurus Nascar Winston Cup car>

Thumbs up Best to Lew

Lew, Just read of your incident. Hope you heal up quickly and well. I still recall passing you in that wonderful yellow SPF on the day you were first bringing it home from Reno as I headed to Dynamic. Also the times I saw it and you in Vallejo at the shop.
We're in Houston now, with SPF 1580- relocated in Sept:-(
All the best,
Stu (formally from Napa)

Hey Lew,

Heal!

Come to think of it, I'll race you!

Three months, eleven days into the healing process for a crushed wrist from filppimg my Cobra in turn 3 at Summit Point on Aug 15

Still in a cast, although the pins are out...

Best,

Tom

All

Actually, the reports on Lew were initially somewhat understated, it seems that he is not as well as I had been led to believe. It does sound like he will recover however, but not in a few weeks. Here is the report from the open track group:

Lew is worse than we thought. Here is an email that I just rec'd.

<<Thanks for your kind thoughts. Lew is in critical, but stable condition at

UCD Medical Center in Sacramento. He had multiple fractures; collar bones,

upper back, ribs, left arm & hand. He also needs repair on his ear. There

is some internal bleeding. He was in surgery this morning. I don't know the

prognosis at this time. He will be laid up for quite a while, I believe. I

don't know when he will be able to come home. He was iujured doing what he

fully enjoyed. >>

As Randy suggests , you might want to speak with him about open track. Or with me on why I won't open track mine at speed even though I held an FIA International 'B' license for years...
