Thumbs up SB100 /Registration

It has been a long battle. Been on and off Temporary permits since July 03. Last week I was ready to register with BAR and Smog exempt tag. so I lined up at 7am at DMV and later was advised DMV "mislaid" my original VIN certification from CHP, Cert of Origin also brake and lamp adjustment certificates. Worked to replace and get new documents, then lined up at 6.30am today at DMV. I was then told to get a Bond (cost $1,070) before anything could be processed and at 4.50pm today I walked out with registration tags and personalized plates.
At last ...... X COBRA X is on the road.

John.

If someone wants to know what a Cobra means - tell them we would take half a year of stress and hassle to drive it.

Happy Days!! Hope I'm not to far behind. I had all the paper work back to DMV and then they said they didn't like the Vin # now back to the CHP for a new Vin #. Got the Bond for 1% of value.

Rick

Hope to meet the East Bay group someday

Rick,

What kind of VIN did you get that they didn't like? I have heard that CHP will simply use your SP O... number as your VIN. Did you have such a seven digit # or did they give you a more traditional 17 digit VIN?

My DMV appt. is tommoro. Already did the BAR thing and all the other stuff. I believe I will keep the SPO # as well for a vin. I had to get a 1% bond too.

SB100. Bond? What bond? Is this new ? I registered mine last year. This is the first I've heard of a bond. I did have to pay taxes and stuff though (about $1300).

The Bond is for the cars going through the re-registration process, that were first registered as a 1965 ford ect. and in my case the CHP was going to keep the same vin # but DMV didn't like it so I need to go back and get a CA # or use the SPF # of my car.

I still have a spot from last year. I'm really stuck in limbo until the car is runnning, then it's off to the CHP and BAR. Just out of curiosity..how far in advance did you make your appointments? I plan to do both in the San Jose area. I think a scheduled CHP visit should be pretty easy, but I'm more concerned about the BAR. I hope another extension won't be necessary

Just two more weeks

When I called to make my BAR appointment the person said they had something that was about four days in the future. I was not able to make that day and asked if they had anything sooner. He said they had something that afternoon if I could make it (Can I make it? Does a bear you know what in the woods?). Scheduling the CHP was the same. I called and they said I could come by that afternoon.

John,
Just completed CHP and BAR. Actually was a good experience, nice people both places! No mention of lights/brakes check though. Who are you using as a contact at DMV, Davis-draper or LeMay? Sacramento or Local office?

I used the Walnut Creek DMV office, but they check with Sacramento and they called for Brake and Lamp.

Good luck

I am about to head out and register my car correctly. I'd like to get some of the "tips" and learn some of the pratfalls that occur when going from an "improperly titled" car to a SB-1578 car. I'd be happy to do this off line or by phone. I am at DaelB@aol.com Thanks.

Fitzroyk;

I used the Walnut Creek local DMV.
They did require in the last stages both Brake and Lamp Adjustment certs.

Gene,
When you say you have spot from last year, it made me think.
Are you sure it did NOT expire on December 31st 2003?

I know it doesn't seem right but, my understanding was the registration had to be completed in the year you were issued the SB-100 number.

I doubt it that they would make you pay the taxes all over again, but I thought they could make you pay the fees and the other registration and application fees all over. Most importantly it would be a heart breaker if you go there with all documjents at hand and only to be told, you have to re-apply for a new SB-100
number.

As few as they have remaining, you may want to check into it.

John,
Thanks for the info. I will be acting on it very soon. I am going to give DMV Sac time to get their notices out, before heading off to WC DMV. Heard individual will be receiving statements ($) in the next week or two. I will have all the small stuff out of the way with just fees and THE Bond to deal with, Hopefully.
On a side note great to see that Dael is still around. Been nice to Bikers?

I too had been told SPCNS certificates expire in the calander year they are issued. 86% of the sequence numbers are already gone for '04. That's 428 in 29 business days. yikes
