Default Cobra Friendly Insurance Companies - Who do you use?

Well, it looks like my project is going to be roadworthy in a matter of weeks; and it's time to start shopping for insurance.

I called my current carrier of 20yrs (State Farm), and they promptly informed me they don't insure AC Cobras; period.

I have information on the way from "Classic Auto" and another classic auto insurance company, but I'm wondering if that is really the best route. I have no idea how these smaller companies are in regard to actually settling claims.

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone that has had experience; it may save me some heartache.

Thanks,

Byron Reynolds

Hey Byron, I use AllState with no problems.
I can get you in touch with my agent if you like.
I think you should worry about getting a pilots liscense for that thing

Default First Contact Unsuccessful

I think contacting the right agent is key... I called them cold, and "we don't insure kit cars" was the response.

I had Allstate on my SPF, at a very high rate, limited mileage etc.--been with them for over 20 yrs, house, health , life, business, vechicles,at the time I insured I had no moving violations in 30 yrs--wouldn't insure my 289FIA this time.

Shopped around and American Hobbyist had the best rate, easy to deal with, great coverage, no mileage limits, haven't had to file any claims but the agent I have answered any and all my questions--I got a speeding ticket last Sept and it was no problem--they insured the car anyway.

Insured mine about three weeks ago through State Farm. Been with them for 20 yrs or so. Same agent for the last 14 yrs.

They didn't really seem to know what a cobra was. Mine's titled as a '66 and I really didn't discuss the "kit" issue. Insured for an agreed value of 25000. 7500 mile/yr limit is not a problem. A little expensive at 250/6 months for full coverage with glass etc, 500 deductible, but State Farm always pays out right away and is good to work with.

Try another State Farm agent if you like State Farm. Mine didn't bat an eye.

I'm moving to AZ soon and would appreciate your agents info. I'll be starting my Cobra kit in the next 1-2 years so any help will be appreciated.

You can send the info to deanr@hotmail.com

Thanks

Progressive will insure anything you own in any state (except for DC, NJ, MA, NC, and WV). They don't write insurance in MA or NJ at all, and what they'll write on in the other 3 is more limited than the other 45.

I work there (but not in Claims so if you had a bad claims experience, don't yell at me!!). Mine's insured as a self assembled thingy.

Having just done a bunch of research on all the big insurance companies (I work in Progressive's Comparison Rating Group), I can tell you that the insurance of specialty items is almost entirely an agent decision. Some agents will insure just about anything. Some won't even insure a motorcycle (many, in fact!).

Yes, this is a small and shameless plug (but I'm not in sales, so I really don't care), but give 1-800-PROGRESSIVE a call (you don't have to dial SIVE).

They should be able to set you up.

If you click on this link, select your state, and hit the orange button, you'll be taken to a comparison chart that I made. I just finished updating it w/ new information last week, although the date will read 01/19/2004. Maybe I should ask my boss if I can add a line to it under the Special Product Lines section for "Cobra Replicas" ???

J.P. is Progressive's policy stated or agreed value?

Never refer to it as a "kit" car... The term Replica works better.

Default Cobra Insurance

I suggest you try Robbin Terry at Midwest Classic Insurance 1-888-271-4000. I just got insurance from him and I was very satisfied. He is a car guy and will write cobra policies. His rates were good and the service was great. He returned all my emails and phone calls immediately. Best of luck.

Default J.P. who is your agent?

I just got off the phone with progressive. He told me that they really don't use stated value with this type of vehicle. He said they use a blue book type of value system, and that if the car were a total loss it would be " valued as a beater vehicle" Not what I was looking to hear. I live outside of coulmbus , ohio, and have an ERA cobra. If you could give me contact info on your agent I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks
Paul

ANPAC (American National Property and Casualty) has treated me quite well with insuring my SPF. They have what they call their CHROME coverage for specialty vehicles (stated value). In fact, their regular rates were much better than Geico, so I switched my regular vehicles over as well.

I havn't had to submit any claims, so I cannot speak to how well they handle them. But, their service thus far has been great. If they handle claims just as well, I will be more than pleased.
