Default a MN builder goes hoop-jumping in CA

ok...so I have seen a few posts that refer to a 'SBC-100' that is available January 2nd 2005....does this allow a Cobra that WILL NOT pass any smog tests (500+hp pump gas motor) to be legal and titled in CA?When I moved here 2 months ago, I assumed that I would have to sell my car in MN once it gets painted, but after experiencing the weather here, I REALLY want to bring it down here to the bay area. if any of you are knowledgeable about registration methods in this area, please let me know...I really need some help. My car is almost done, and I need to make some big decisions soon. Other questions...... how are Cobra replicas registered in this state? by kit manufacture date, completion date, or body-model date? are they insured the same way? man...I have serious issues....lol. thanks... Bowtie

Bowtie,

SB-100 will let you register any special construction car, not just a Cobra It will BE SMOG EXEMPT even if you have a 1,000 horse engine. You as the owner have the choice of registering it by body style year or engine year. Go with the 1965 body style as that was before emissions begin out here. All areas of the state are the same for SB-100. Your only big hurdle will be getting one of the 500 numbers per year that are alloted.

Goto the DMV site to get the steps.

www.dmv.ca.gov./vr/spcns/htm

To see what forms you need and print them out go to

www.cobratrader.com/registrationca.html

This will give you step by step procedures and even tell you which memo the DMV person will have at the DMV office to tell them how to do it in case they haven't done one.

Default SB 100 ruling...

Chapter 13, section 666, paragraph 11 of SB 100 specifically states, and I quote,
"No cobra replicas will be allowed to be registered anywhere in the state of California that have a small block Cheverolet utililzed as the powerplant. Any violation of this stipulation will be considered a felony with a MANDATORY five year prison sentence."
I'd hate to see you get thrown in jail, man.

Randy,

I think they amended that to, If it is a FORD engine made to replicate a small block Chevy, and you can provide papers to prove it is a FORD under the cosmetics you can get a special waiver.

Falsifying engine papers is a 20 year sentence.

apparently, all of you are guilty of merely glancing at the regulations. had you bothered to scan down to the fine print you would have seen the following, and I quote; ".....Subparagraph A1:Addendum to Ch.13 sect 666 para 11/SB-100 regulatory code. If applicant Chevrolet builder is able to defeat a complainant Ford builders vehicle in a competition wherein both aforementioned vehicle owners shall, to the best of their ability, accelerate each respective vehicle to a velocity of 100 MPH and subsequently decelerate to a standing position in the shortest time frame, shall, upon acknowledgement of such victory, be granted immediately and permanently all rights and priveledges accorded to said Ford builders....." So maybe i have a shot at a SB100 after all...I mean...all this is true...you can't make this stuff up, ya know? Bowtie

hmmm..i thought for sure that a ford builder or 2 would challenge the validity of the regulation i posted...i can't believe all the die-hard blue oval fans would just roll over like that!!! still, i think i am going to enjoy the bay area club forum a great deal....some of you show a very dry sense of humor which i am a big fan of.... Bowtie (<---thinks the ford guys are too easy..hehe)

Bowtie,

I really wanted to take you up on your last post but unfortunately up here in Northern Calif., no one can get a Chevy to run long enough to find out what they will do. The last person that used a Chevy in his Cobra tried it out and it ran just long enough to get him to a garage where he could have a FORD engine installed.

Thumbs down Crimes agains nature

Doesn't putting a chevy engine in a Cobra fall under 'Crimes Against Nature'? I really wouldn't want to go to prison with that charge on my record! A hard way to go!
