I realize this year, more than any other will be very difficult for the DMV clerk to get through to Sacramento at the first or second or the 10th. try. This has been a problem in the past.

Do whatever you have to to stay there and not leave until you get your number!! Clerk's first reaction after getting a busy signal with many people still in line for other DMV matters will be to ask you to come back later, or may be even some other day.

Do NOT do that. As she/he is helping others , other locations are getting through and getting those numbers. By the time your clerk gets around to it, the numbers may very well be gone!!

I don't know what you have to do, bring lunch or flowers or whatever, but do not leave until you get your number. With you not standing in front of them it is not likely she is going to keep trying during her lunch break until she gets thrugh.

Your best bet will be is to treat this car like new construction and start from scratch. Any previous registration will only complicate things.

You don't have to take your car there. They don't need to see it. She will give you a temporary good for 60 plus days to drive your car around to get other things like CHP and BAR done If you need additional extensions, they will even do that 60 days later..

You are then on your way to a Cobra ownership, California style.

I am afraid there will be a lot of broken hearts this year.

Turk is right. If it's your turn it's YOUR TURN. It took me about an hour and a half back in 2003. It was the first year for previously registered cars and 1578 was something new. Be polite but be insistant. Tell them you will be happy to wait while they get through. Offer to wait on hold for them. (the numbers come from Sacramento via telephone, or at least they did 2 years ago)... But don't leave the DMV without your number.

It would be nice if any of you who are planning on being in line tomorrow, would come back and tell us what number you were assigned.

It will give the rest of us an idea, how fast they are going to run out of numbers this year.

I have been guessing, they don't make it to the end of the month, but not sure how manyh are going to be held back.

I am not trying to blow this out of proportion, as much as we love cars in California, and the fact that this is one of the most fertile grounds for almost ALL manufacturers, in a few years a Cobra (Replica or otherwise) will have a serious premium attached to it, if it is properly registered in this state.

It maybe worth more than a CSX number.

Question Temp Reg w/out SB100 #?

Did I mis-understand something? Is it correct that you can go to DMV in mid-year (May-June) and pay your fees and get a temp reg to drive with, and that they will renew it until Jan and you can get an sb100 #?

Jdog,

That seems to be a DMV by DMV person thing. I talked to four people in ours up here and two said no flat out, that they only issued temps for you to use while going from BAR to inspections and such, one said yes if you had proof the car was insured and had all receipts, and the other said yes. So it would seem from our case here that it depends on whom you talk to.

Temps are issued at the discretion of the local office. If your fees are paid and your paperwork is complete, CHP inspection is done, light and safety inspection is complete there is no reason you shouldn't be able to drive your car regardless of spcns sequence numbers remaining or whether they are out.

Again the two processes are not mutually exclusive. If your car is new, never registered you are suppose to be exempt in California for 4 years anyway.

In that scenario you might be ok to wait for a few years. (but why would you). Someone clarify that if it has happened to you.

Finally! As of 10:30am I am the proud owner of SB # 88! I just want to say thanks again to everybody for the great advice and information along the way. For what it's worth I don't think that the numbers are going to last nearly as long as they did last year so if you were in my boat, get down to DMV quickly. Thanks again everybody.

When I got my SB100 number this morning they gave me a 90 day temp to be able to drive it to the BAR and CHP. I asked if I could drive it anywhere and she said so long as it's insured and you have the red sticker on the window it should be no problem.

Andreas,
There were three other people waitng for sequence numbers, I happened to be one of those three. I left and all three of you were gone on my return. Did you and the others receive your numbers at the same time or was there an intermission between those annoucements? If the first cituation happened,(all at the same time) do you know what those numbers were? I am asking for a reason and will explain Saturday.

Hey Fitz,

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. The three of us that were left at the DMV were all taken within 10 minutes of each other. From what I was told they were only supposed to assign one number per phone call but that didn't seem to be the case considering we all left within minutes of each other. I'm not sure what the other guys numbers were but the gentleman before me said that he attends the breakfasts so maybe we can find out then.

Andreas, what DMV office did you use? I will be going through this in 2006 after Dmv pulled my title and registration because the car was not a 1965 Ford.

Cool

Thank you Chris & Ron (great pics by the way!). The search was a huge help and found a great step-by-step process with the link to ClubCobra.com. Hopefully I will have some pics to post in 10-12 weeks!

Doug
