foggy tachometer
Would it be normal for my Smith's tachometer to fog up?
I garage my car (garage is around 60 and I keep a soft cover over it) but when I take the car out in the cold (35-45 degrees) the tach fogs up. So far there does not seem to be a problem but I would rather nip it in the bud especially while it is still under SPF warranty. This occurred even before the heavy rains we have had. The fog seems to clear after I drive it and the outside air warms up but I just haven't put many miles on recently.
Thoughts?

Tom,
I don't have Smith's gauges but mine doesn't fog up at all. I had mine out the other evening. It was 34 degrees and I ran it until I got all the oil and water up to temp then put it back in the garage as I was just to cold. It seems if the tach does it and that is normal for your gauges, the rest would also do it.

My SW gauges fog up once in a while (different gauges at different times). I don't know the fix (if there is one) but it's probably too painful to endure. Nothing worked in the cars I drove in the '60s, so I just chaulk it up to "period correctness".

Check Curtis for the right answer.
You cannot fix English stuff, that is why they have such an enormous market penetration here. The only good English cars are on a race track and even the Fiat that Schumacher drives beats them......

Tom, I have Classic instraments and my tach fogs in cool weather also. I thought it may be because I didn't have any vents in the dash to let the warm air out.

It has more to do with temp. dewpoint and condensation. All of which happen all around you all the time. It's the thing that happened when you were 16 and learned where the best places to "park" were, just on a larger scale.
In modern automobiles and some not so modern the heather and even a defroster make it a non issue. Different climates get it at different times of the year.
If it annoys you install a working heater / ventalation system. in your car. Driving with the lights on will stop it in all most all instances provided you have lighted gauges.
