Know anyone at Fedex?
Ok, I have to ask. Anyone know someone locally at Fedex? Specifically Fedex Ground terminal on Berry Ave. In Sacramento??
I had a pair of heads shipped from Medford, OR to Vacaville. 4 1/2 hours by truck. They both got scanned in at Sacramento but only one made it to Vacaville.
The Fedex Customer service people were pretty helpless first telling me they couldn't deliver it because the package was damaged and they needed to return it to the sender. (375 miles verses the 35 miles to my house) Then telling me I could come get it in Sacramento. When I called to schedule a time to come get it they told me it had been shipped back.
I called them today to verify the sender had indeed received it back and was told it was not sent back, it had been destroyed... A 427 cylinder head was destroyed??? I explained that the head had thrived in a 450 degree environment that would kill all known life on this planet, at 180 psi for over 40 years... How was it destroyed???
Finally, after promising a lawsuit if I was not shown the carcass I was told they lost it. They have the package, but the contents was missing.
I assured them it would be quite easy to see being cast iron, 8" by 10" by 24" and weighing 47 pounds. The lady who had suddenly become very nice, initiated a search procedure and I was given a case number. I can't help but wonder why this couldn't have been done Friday wahen it went missing.
It isn't that something was damaged or even lost that irritates me, it's that 3 other representatives either lied to me or were lied to and repeated the lie to me.
So... If you are a Fedex employee or know one, can you please help me find Spot, my lost cylinder head. He's about 40, grey with a rusty complextion, and wirey spring like hair. He's wearing a tag that says C0AE-6090-H (390 HP with 427 medium rise valves)
Tracking # 045807429088304
Lost Case ID# 0119412112

The funny thing about this, is that a couple of months ago, I remember reading about someone losing a head with UPS and a similar situation.
Maybe there is a connection here?????? Could a former UPS employee now be working for Fedex, and maybe building a Cobra (with stolen parts). Inquiring minds want to know.
This is a job for CSI - better yet, call in the Feds if its interstate.
I have nothing but excellent service with FedEx!!!!!
I also like to use FedEx ground for heavy stuff - very reliable.
And now a word from Flying Freddie please.

ATTN: SCOBRAC....Flyin_Freddie Checks In...
Well, I read your posting and your email you sent me and did some preliminary investigation.
First of all, I humbly take offense at your Custom User Text - the little line that appears below your name in the left hand column when you post. Please note mine. I'll change mine when you change yours...
Second...asking ME to comment on this is a little like calling Ford and asking for an IT guy because your FoMoCo starter didn't work on your Fiesta this morning! I'm an Information Technology guy...not a customer service agent...but, since I helped design and develop some of our package tracing software, I took a look at your information.
When I looked at your package trace the data only showed one package. Were the heads shipped as ONE package, or two. I can't tell for sure, but it appears as one package. However, since the package was said to weigh 47 lbs, something seems amiss to me. ONE head would weigh about 47 lbs, but not two. I would think that two together would weight 90 lbs or so...but I don't know for sure, hence my question.
If the shipper tried to ship two packages on one airbill, then I understand how one could have gotten lost. We would have had no record of the second package. Each package should have had an airbill.
Were you the shipper?
In my 29+ years with FedEx, the number one cause of shipping problems is the packaging used by the shipper. Packages are subject to a lot of high speed sort conveyors, diverters, and other types of equipment that can cause poorly packaged shipments to come through the end of their packaging. ..which I suspect is ths case here. The problem is further exacerbated when the contents come out and we have no idea from which package they came, unless the contents is internally labeled. Quite often the missing contents turns up a few days later, and it takes a while for someone to realize that what was reported as missing is really the contents someone else is looking for. Remember, the customer service agent is not physically co-located with the shipping personnel, and must rely on the data presented them on the screen...they can't just step out into the sort area, warehouse, or truck dock and look for a missing package.
Give our tracing people some time to look for the missing part. I'm suspecting it will turn up soon and someone wll make the connection. If not, then please try and contact a supervisor at the Sacramento location. I'll do my best to help you find someone physically located there.
I'm sorry for your misfortune, and I hope the shipper insured the shipment for the appropriate value.
But, since I'm located in Memphis, and your cylinder head is located somewhere else, I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to help much.

I noted an article in the Wall Street Journal today that Fed EX and UPs have announced that they just murged. The new corporation is named FED UP.
Sorry, Michael, I don't mean to rub salt in your wounds.
Hope everything works out for you.

Interesting information on packaging! I think I will put ON THE PIECE itself enough information to retrieve the part IF it comes out of the package. Another level of protection.
And as I understand it, if you buy something from someone and THEY ship it to you it is YOUR responsibility to get it insured, not theirs. So you may have to REQUEST they insure and put the extra dollars on the shipping bill for you.

You're on target, Excaliber...
Slick...you're right on target. I've shipped TONS of stuff back and forth with FedEx in the 29 years I've been here. I even specify that vendors ship anything I order via FedEx. I've NEVER had anything lost...I've had some stuff misrouted/missorted, but it always turned up in a few days. The only time I had something mis-DELIVERED, was when I made a mistake on the recipients address...and that was MY fault. I'm not saying SCOBRAC's is the one to blame here, please don't make an assupmtion here. But, most shippers have no idea the high-speed sorting equipment most of our packages must travel through to get to their destination. Frankly, this equipment is tough on poorly packaged shipments. Therefore, whenever I ship something heavy-weight....cams, headers, side pipes, etc....I always wire a small tag to the item with my name, address, and phone number written on it. That way, should the item and it's packaging get separated, the item is labeled itself.
Bottom line is packaging can make you or break you. Make sure your packaging WILL NOT permit the contents to move around inside. Any movement here can cause the contents to rip through the packaging when the box is stopped by a diverter, or someother sort device. I've shipped side pipes, roll bars, headers, and cams all over the US with no problems because I made sure the item was securely packaged before it was sent. I pick up each box and shake the hell out of it...if I can hear movement, then it's not packaged well enough....open it up and repack it. Stryofoam peanuts work well...as does wadded up newspaper, excellsior, or something along those lines to completely fill the voids between the item and the package sides. I cannot stress this enough.
I sure hope we can find SCOBRAC's cyclinder head.

Freddie
afraid I'm to blame for the contact made to you...my suggestion since i knew you worked there.
Our firm has used FedEx for decades. When we need to get something to court, excuses to the judge that the delivery service lost it (akin to dogs eating homework) will not suffice. I won't say their service has been perfect, but it's damn good.

I love those things. A good friend of mine got one when they first came out...and it has been a solid bike with no problems.
How are the boys? Are they in jail yet?
