Default 427 CobraToploader ID question

What is the correct toploader used in a 427 S/C cobra. Were they 28 or 31 splines. Also part numbers if anybody has them available. Thanks!

Correct T/L was a big input (1-3/8" input) and 31 spline output.

Blykins is right. It is called the Big I/O by some. It is supposed to handle 1000HP. Not sure about that one, but mine works well.

You may want to talk to David Kee about this for further information. He is the best.

Sal,

The early 427 COBRAs carried the FORD Toploader that had a small output shaft, not the 1.375" , it was a 24" length, 28 spline, carrying a tag beginning with HEH-??, and almost exactly like the ones used in the last comp 289 cars. Almost all of the early ones had a 2.32 first gear. The tail housing should carry a C4DR-?? casting number and was 14" long, this way you will get the proper drilled/tapped holes.

In reality there were over 130 models of the toploader offered, and not being a restoration I wouldn't worry about the ID on it too much. Most just buy waht they can find and adapt. David Kee or Dan Williams can supply the rear tailhousing and output if you are sticking to a true configured 10 bolt.

If you want a challenge try to get a C5ZZ-7400B shifter and the C5ZZ-7326/8-e/C rods for it. Most are adapting a Hurst 4 speed lower shifter assy. and proper Hurst rods, that is if you have the proper case for these rods. You can always fabricate a relocator plate.

Good luck,
Grumpy

That 2.32 1st gear ratio is consistent with a "close ratio" top loader. 2.78 was the wide ratio. I understand the Comp cars, at least, did run close ratio, which would be the right choice for road racing.

I was told by David Kee that you couldn't run a 1-1/16" (small) input shaft with a 427/428, etc. because the pilot was too long.....The pilot for an 1-3/8" input is 3/4" long.....the small input is 1-1/8".

Krazecj;I was at Kee website but had only seen the 427 Cobra listed as having a 28 spline output. I have since spoke to David and found out that the newer cars were made with 31 splines and differant casing num, bers. Thanks all sofar some really informative stufff!

The 289 Factory Comp Cars also used Chevrolet gearing in the BW T-10. Better ratios than the Ford.

I spoke to the owner of csx3106 or 3104, I can't remember which one. Anyways, his car came with a 427 center oiler, and a big in - small out toploader like what Grumpy said.

I would guess the later ones, and maybe most of them, were the big in - big out version.
