Default Registration Question

I know this has been discussed to death, but unfortunately the posts don't all agree with each other, and every year CA seems to change what works and what doesnt.

So....Would someone be kind enough to walk me through the process? If its easier to email me that's fine, or I can try to hit the next breatfast. My car should be done mid April so I want to be sure I'm as ready as can be.

Basically I know I need an SB100 number next Jan (Roush 427R). But if I understand correctly (and I need to sort out the exact order to do this in so that I don't get started down the path of smog based on engine year and get stuck) I can get a temp op permit once or twice this year.

Here is my current best guess.

1) Go to DMV submit registration application and pay fees
2) CHP inspection
3) Back to DMV and beg for Temp Operating Permit
4) DO NOT GO TO BAR
5) Dec 1 06 make DMV appointment for Jan 1 07
6) Wait in line for hours, pray, curse, sweat, etc. get SB100#
7) Go to BAR

Half of what I have may be completely wrong, I wouldnt be suprised at all.
Anyway thanks for the help, and again sorry for rehashing a very old topic, but after reading old threads for several hours I found I was more confused than when I started.

If anyone prefers to just email me you can get me at daryl.lang@amd.com

Thanks,

Daryl

Sound about right... I would change:

1. Goto DMV, submit, pay, get TOP.

The DMV will give you a TOP at your first visit, because for all they know, you will be smogging by year of block. Also, you will need a TOP to drive to the CHP, since the CHP (or any law enforcement) will not be too happy with you driving on the street without one. This means that you skip #3 in your step, however when the TOP expires, you may have to beg for another one.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Randy R...

Thanks Randy! I appreciate the help.

I've been meaning to make it to a breakfast to chat with you guys about registration but the damn weather is just not cooperating.

My car is scheduled to be trailed home on tuesday, all complete and ready for fun.

I started filling out the application form that I downloaded from the DMV website and I'm confused (OK I'm always confused, this is just more than usual).

Can anyone tell me where on the form (or which form) I designate that I want to register the car as a SPCNS? I'm using the forms from this link on the DMV site.
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/spcnsreg.htm

My best guess is this is somehow designated on the "Verification of Vehicle" form which says NOT TO BE COMPLETED BY APPLICANT. So I'm guessing I just tell the DMV clerk and they take care of it?

Another question - the application asks for the VIN number a lot. I'm assuming that I don't fill this out, as CHP won't have assigned me a VIN yet, is that correct?

Thanks again for all the help, sure wish I could have made it to a breakfast to ask these questions instead of just posting.

I had to place a few calls to the DMV question line about the online form also when I registered in 2003. Just be damn sure you have your receipts in order, one for the car, one set for the engine, tranny and installation work, and one for the barke and light inspection. Make copies of everything. It doesn't hurt to shop around for answers to the same question(s) also, so as to prepare yourself for a variety of responses when your at the DMV counter 1/2/07. Be prepared, be prepared, be prepared.
