Buy a Cobra out of state
Hello
Since I can not find many car sale locally in the bay area that I like , but I saw them in other state, I do know CA have smog restriction, and SB100 is the only way to go. Now here is my question and hope that you can help, I have read many posts releated to SB100, but still unsure(clear) about this process.
Question:
1- Cobra will not pass check, even if I want to go the route of smog every 2 yrs
2- I need to add all the requirement stuff to pass smog check if I want to go the route of smog every 2 yrs
3- Out of state cars must have VIN or I will have to request VIN from CHP to
use in CA
Thanks

1. I don't understand. Is this a question or a statement?
2. Yes, this applies to any vehicle registered in CA with a model year > 1975; not specific to an SPCNS.
3. Yes, this applies to any vehicle registered in CA; not specific to an SPCNS.
TC, if I have mentioned this before, then please accept my apology for repeating myself... That said, I strongly recommend that you attend one of our BACC Breakfasts either at Athens or Bajas, and have an interactive conversation with those who have 1st hand experience with exactly what you are going through.
Regards,
Randy...

Yes, I did go to Athens last week, and meet lots of wonderful folks there. I am planning to come back again.
As far as SB100, some said it's pain orther said not a big deal, so going back to my question rather than a statement. If I don't mind to do every 2 year smog check and I buy a car out of state, what do I have to do to get it pass, or SB100 is the only way out ?
Thanks
TC

Hey TC,
Regardless whether you buy a vehicle from out of state or build/buy one in state, your choices are 1) SB100 or 2) smog by year of block.
There has been quite a bit writen on this subject of choices already.
Make sense? Hope this helps.

Hey
Mulv still has a nice SuperFormance car for sale. I am never home long enough to sell it locally, but I can communicate over the web quite well. It still has a California title, by the way and the engine has a 1963 block so you don't need SB100. The CHP sticker is under the hood still.... send me an email for the details, most of the guys at Athens know my car...

You have very few choices...
At the risk of offending the sensitivities of AG Morgester... Keep it registered out of state. This is of course illegal, sort of. The DMV wants your money but they have failed you. You are willing to pay but they are unwilling to accept.
Common law tells us if you have tried to pay and the party declines or refuses to accept you are not obligated, that said I am not advocating running your car unregistered... Nevada is happy to help you.
"SB-100" has unconstitutionally created a special class of people. The DMV has compounded the problem by making side deals with felonious builders who have built dozens of cars with fraudulent document which have been shuffled to the front of the line on January 2 to register the cars in exchange for guilty pleas on lesser charges.
Unless or until someone challenges the law and wins there are few options to you. I suggest using an early engine which requires only a PCV valve. Engines cast before 1966 are the best choices.

Thanks for the info, as of now, I have not own a Cobra yet. However, I have seen many nice car out of state and price seem cheaper compared to Cali car. I do not mine to smog the car every 2 years, the main parts is to understand which components are required to add on and make it pass by the engine block based by the year and make it legal in CA, IF it's only requires only a PCV valve, can this be DIY ?
Thanks

Keep in mind that there are two components to passing smog: 1) visual inspection, 2) snif test.
Using a pre-1966 block with a PCV does not guarantee that it will pass the snif test.

You'll need a handkerchief to pass the sniff test...
I still have a nice car with a California title....

It's so easy to get a SB100 number I can't believe how people carry on about it. The steps are well know and being at DMV early on the 1st of January really isn't very hard. When your done any work you ptu it is nothing compared to trying to pass a smog test every 2 years. Randy is right there are many people in the BACC that have gone through the process. I also have not heard from any members of this forum that wanted a SB100 number this year , went to DMV on the first day and didn't get one.
