Default SB100 Registration Questions

SB100 Topic has been beaten to death, and im sorry for bringing it up yet again. But I still have two more questions for which I could not find answers:

1) If I live in CA, and buy a cobra that is already registered in CA as SB-100, do I get to keep the SB-100 without any major hassle? ('Major hassle' here is relative since we are talking about the california DMV)

2) If I have a SB100 car, do I have to get in line every year on the first day of business to get it re-registered as an SB100? Or is it valid until I sell/wreck/die? (im aiming for the latter... and hopefully not correlated to the wrecking of said vehicle)

Thanks

Welcome to the BACC!

The short answers are:

1. Yes, the Smog Exemption (that SB100 provides) follows the vehicle title, regardless of to whom the vehicle is registered within the state.
2. No, acquiring an SB100 Sequence number is a one-time step in the processing of the title; it is valid as long as the title is valid (or until the state decides something different). Only the registeration needs to be renewed annually, like any other motor vehicle.

Hope this helps,
Randy R...

Budfroggy,

Randy is correct. I trust him on anything related to SB100! He is the one guy who truly helped me with the "battle" to get my car through the SB100 process.

I think you will truly find it much easier and more valuable to own a car with an SB100 exemption. This is both for your benefit and also when it comes time to sell it. So, even if it costs a little more buy a car with the SB100 exemption, get one where this is already completed. Believe me it will save you lots of time and hassles for as long as you own the car.

Hello Tom,

CA will not honor another states smog exemption. You would need to use SB1578 (I think I have that number right), which is basically SB100 for an out of state used vehicle. Sorry to say you'll be in the same boat as me and the other chumps here in CA waiting for Jan 2nd.......

They are part of the 500. Doesn't matter whether it is an SB100 or SB1578, they only allow 500 total exemptions.

May I hijack a part of this thread?..........as I am heading toward the Jan 2 wait period.........because I have a home here, but have a hawaiian DL.........does that affect the Jan 2 issue of getting a SB100 #? wouldn't think so as the car has a home here, and I have another car which is already insured and such.............thanks, guys, for any info....................
