Default recommendations for weekend destination

OK Bay Area guys,

I'm looking for advice on a place I can take the wife in the Cobra. Basically not looking for too far of a drive (hour or two), looking for a nice scenic drive, maybe someplace down south on 1, big sur, carmel, heck even san luis isnt to bad a drive from Gilroy? Or up north - napa, russian river area, etc?

Regardless of the destination I want to be sure wherever we are going has nice safe overnight parking. Bed and Breakfast type place would be great, but it doesnt have to be. Grandma is going to watch our son so it'll just be the two of us.

Thanks for any recommendations.

Daryl

Hi Daryl,

Call the Culinary Institute in Healdsburg, terrific food/wine and very nice rooms.

From Gilroy there would be several really nice roads. Possibly out to Amador County also.

Default How about Hearst Castle

I'm told that if you call hearst in advance, they will make parking arrangements for atypical needs.

In addition, about some 40mi north of hearst lies an affordable hotel on the ocean side with a cliff view, good restaurant, and the like... I've stayed there, it felt like a holiday. Price was reasonable. View was cool. Restaurant was good. Very relaxing place. Hotel has arrangement such that you can get a room near your car and keep an eye on it; though I had no worries when I was there, it was very mellow; almost vacant. About this time last year is when I went.

Check in at the Old Monterey Inn B&B for the weekend in Monterey. First class place and exceptional parking. Take a drive down Hwy 1 to Rocky Point Restauarant for lunch or dinner. Or...trip on down to Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur for a very private weekend. Or....drive down from the Old Monterey Inn for an early dinner at one of the exceptional restauarants like Ventana's hotel and restauarant. Takes about an hour from Monterey to Ventanas. Bundle up on the way back! Or....dine at the restauarant at Highlands Inn in Carmel Highlands. You won't be disappointed in any of these places!
