Default DMV Reassigned my 2005 SB100 number to someone else!

So in 2004, I was part of the DMV hoard on Jan 2 and got a SB-100 number.

Due to the DMVs inability to tell me whether or not the numbers actually expire annually, I did this again in 2005 and got a 2005 SB-100 number as well.

Today, I'm finally ready for my BAR inspection. So I called the appointment desk and gave them my 2005 number. They looked it up, and to my amazement, the number was not assigned to me.

Then, I gave them my 2004 number. It was good, assigned to me, and in the record it was noted that some 5 months after I was assigned my 2005 SB-100 number they discovered I was given two SB-100 numbers for the same car and took it upon themselves to reassign my 2005 number to someone else. Nice huh?

This would seem to reinforce the notion that SB-100 numbers don't expire.

Also, they CAN be reassigned. It happened to me.

I'm just glad I didn't chuck my 2004 paperwork.

Byron

I'm not sure that "Reassigned" is quite accurate, but whatever you call it, I think they did the right thing. For once, let's congratulate one DMV employee for seeing that a number was "issued in error" and not just trashing it, but instead giving one more person the opportunity to register their car.

Default I Agree

I agree completely.

I've been saying for over a year now that I wish I could give away my 2nd SB100 # to someone in need. I'm not complaining, except perhaps about the system in general. It would have been nice to (a) not have to stand in line all day for another unneeded number and (b) have been notified once they reassigned my 2005 number to someone else. Both of these issues were system related.

I don't know why "reassigned" would be inaccurate terminology. The number was officially assigned to me and I was mailed confirmation papers. Then, it was assigned to someone else 6mos later. How is that not reassigned?

I fixed my registration problems by fleeing CA a few years ago! Now I bounce between KS and NM and no longer worry about SB100!

"Reassigned" ?

When I responded I was thinking of just the right way to word it. I missed. I guess what I was trying to say was that WE can't get a number then reassign it to someone/something else, nor can the DMV. But if the number was issued in error, DMV can fix the error. Whenever I get into symantics, I end up more confused than when I started. I think I'm still not understanding what I'm saying.
