Thanks for the tip and for the offer to help. My mechanic has resurfaced so hopefully things are back on track.

Do you mean an entirely different (taller) air cleaner, or do they make taller elements for the one that is currently on it?

Depends on your hood clearence. If you have room, you can just get a taller element. Looking at the engine factory website I think they are giving you an Air-Gap RPM manifold which is just about as tall as a victor jr. I have a performer RPM which gives a lot more room, so no experience here, but maybe some of the other guys who dyno'd at Teds can share, I know Greg ended up switching and picking up several horses, but he put on an entirely new air clearner with a drop base and round not oval.

Well, I’m not going tomorrow. The radiator fan burned up and I overheated in rush hour traffic tonight. When the cap opened the overflow tube blew off and sprayed the whole engine compartment. I let it cool down and babied it home.
So good timing. I ordered a new motor earlier today and will start the swap process next weekend. I guess the car was giving me one last tweak knowing it’s getting a new motor. Should take 4 to 6 weeks. It’s going to be hard, no car to drive. But fun working on it. See you next year.

What happened to everyone? Was it to cold for the fair weather drivers? Shoot, it had to have been in the upper 30's. Doug was the only one to make it to Starbucks.

Scott - Maybe I should have hung out at Santana Row for a while. Just after you turned off at 85 I saw a few drops of rain. That progressed into a steady rain all the way over Hwy 17.

I didn't get too wet . Sunny in Santa Cruz right now.

The motor is a 427 Windsor. The builder is GMP Speed and Machine in Santa Cruz. He’s using a Dart block and heads, Eagle stroker kit, JE pistons, and Comp roller cam. And Webers. He does all the machining. He’s doing 3 motors this Dec., mine being one of them. He’s lending me a plastic block and trans so I can set up motor, trans mounts and headers.
I was seriously going Roush until I found Grant on Tue. He talks freely about what he does and why. I know all the buzzwords but he was able to put it all together and make sense for me. The biggest plus being he’s only 30 min. from my house.
I’ve got a lot of work ahead. I think I need to up size the radiator. A new fan and shroud. And do shrouding in front of the radiator, which the car does not have. I want to down size the trans tunnel. A new e-brake handle and location. Change both master cylinders to Tilton and lower the floor at the pedals.
The last time the car goes out will be on Mon. as I have an appointment to 4 corner weight the car. My motor is off set 1” to the left and I want to see if that is proper compensation for the driver’s weight. I have an excellent opportunity to change that now if needed. They will also do a 4-wheel alignment and wheel balancing. The wheel balancing will be tricky because the outside weights will be placed inside the tire like a tire patch.
I’ll go over to Gilroy in the early morning when it’s cold and bring the car home Tue. early morning without the radiator fan.

Hey Tom, Sounds like a great plan for your new motor. Just a thought - since swapping motors will change the weight of your Cobra, would you be better off corner weighing it AFTER you in install your new motor?

You are correct on the final product. Right now I’m checking on the concept of having the motor offset. Kevin at Performance Art knows my intentions with the motor swap and will tell me if the current offset is a good idea or not. Then I only have to fab the motor mounts once. After all the work is done I’ll corner weight it again.

Doug's almost got it right, 2 Langs might be worse than 1 though because you're doubling your chances or screwing something up

Hope you didnt get rained on this morning taking the car home. I'm trying to figure out how free myself up on saturday to help out, right now I'm on dad duty for the day.

I brought the car home yesterday at 3:30 pm thinking about the rain. It was still cool enough, so no over heating. Very worthwhile day. The corner weights are LF 601, RF 588, LR 868, RR 775. This was with a 1/2 tank of gas. 185 lb. of free weights in the driver seat. It shows the right side lighter than the left. A good argument to leave the motor offset to the right. It also shows 1643 lb in the rear. A 42% front and 58% rear bias. Off the top of my head I would like to see 48% front 52% rear?? What are some opinions here? Maybe more weight in the rear gives better traction. The motor is set back quite a bit so there is room to move it forward. I do need to find out weight difference of the old motor/trans to the new.
A lot of other discovery surfaced. This is taken from Kevin’s report.

“Front springs and shock caps are interfering and cutting into lower control arms. Need to change ends on shocks at LCA attachment points. Outer Hiem joints have play on tie rod assemblies and rack mount point is too high causing a bumpsteer problem and also an issue with Ackerman angle.”

Other items he didn’t write down because they aren’t safety items. He also gave me measurements for how level the frame is and how level the body is. Nether are, so that gives me something to do.
The wheel balancing feels great. I was not able to do any freeway driving, so that will have to wait. A one oz and a two oz weight patch were put in one rear tire. The other rear got a one oz patch inside. He recommends 32 psi in front and 28 psi in the rear. Coming over Hwy 152 the tires felt really good.
