Bay Area Chrome Plater recommendations
I'm going to finally get around to chroming my roll bars after I've fixed a few mis-drilled holes! (Never drill your roll bars at 1:30AM!)
I need a shop that can blast off the powder-coated pieces (2 hoops, 2 3rd-legs)
Hoping to get it to whoever, by March 15th or so.
TIA,
-Herman "289FIA_Cobra"

Call any body shop in S.F., and they will lead you to a great company in S.F. For the life of me I can't remember the name, but they have been there for an eternity.....EXCELLENT WORK

Herman: Don't forget to have the roll bars heat treated after they are plated. Rich

Heat treated? Why? And do platers know to do this?

Herman,
Sick Industries here in town does it. I have no personal experience with them. My dad is restoring a car right now and he had a heck of a time finding a reasonable, good shop.

Sherms has three quality levels. Good, better and best. Most opt for the middle, but if you can afford the highest quality, Sherms can compete with anyone in the US for true show quality. I have several finicky friends with near-Pebble Beach type cars that have had their chrome work done there and they weren't disappointed.

I had a roll bar chromed at Sik Industries, and I would try somewhere else next time. they had it 2 months and didn't pick up the phone to let me know they were having problems with their machine. After 5 visits to their shop, and asking them to re-do it since there were little bubbles everywhere, it turned on fine... and then they didn't know how much they had quoted me, because they didn't write it down.

Herman: Chrome plating causes a phenomenon called hydrogen embrittlement. Hydrogen molecules in the steel cause weakness. Heat treatment (annealing) after the plating releases the bubbles, making the steel stronger. You don't have to worry about this with stuff you just want to add a little bling, but you don't want your roll bars to break just when you need them. I doubt if all chrome platers are aware of this. Just trying to keep you healthy. Rich
