Default Ever been pulled over driving your Cobra?

I hope I'm not jinxing myself here, but I've never been pulled over by the police while driving my Cobra. However, I have been a passenger in a Cobra while getting pulled over by the CHP. I knew it wasn't going to be just a "warning" for the driver when the cop asked what kind of car we were in so he could complete the speeding ticket.

So anyone have any good personal stories?

Default Twice in a year

First time was by a curious cop who wanted to see the car up close and tried to cite some BS about the car is too reflective and can blind people. Second time was legit 53 in a 45. This happened on the same road where Hulk Hogan's kid crashed in Clearwater Fl.

Default Pulled over

While out for a drive on a Sunday morning in Tucson, a policeman pulled up beside me and asked if I was in a hurry! I said no and pulled over. He jumped out of the car with a kit car magazine in his hand and asked to look at the car. I told him that he had raised my blood pressure up a few point with "are you in a hurry" and he apologized. He said that he, and 4 other officers were wanting to build Cobras, would I mind if he called them. Within a couple of minutes it looked like a drug bust. Cops looking in, around, and under the car. I've since gone to lunch with and seen these guys a few times. Hopefully I will never get stopped for real.

Only stopped once after accelerating to about 55 MPH from a dead stop rather quickly in a 35 MPH zone and then let it decelerate in second.

On went the lights ... the Officer said "Try to keep the speed down OK" to which I replied "Yes, Sir". He then said "Nice Cobra" and walked back to his patrol car and drove off. Boy was I lucky.

Knock on my wooden head I have not been ticketed in many years.. I have been stopped and told it was too load but no ticket. I was behind a couple of kids who were hanging out the sun roof and yelling to each other car to car. Traffic was down to about 25MPH with them leading us in a posted 45. This was with 2 lanes on our side so no way to get around them until the road gained another lane. I turned into the new lane and jumped on it hard but only a short blast. The blue lights behind me within seconds of my performance reminded me it may not have been a good idea.

The cop was very stern but cool. He asked me to guess how many codes I just broke if he wanted to get creative. He then asked what my speed was and said I only got 1 chance to answer correctly. Told him I really did not know but knew it was over the posted 45 and maybe 60. He told me that was not close to the 75 he was thinking but no way I could have done 25 to 75 in that distance so would let me go because he could not prove 75, nobody would believe it and he smiled.

Never in the Cobra, Gene. However, I did get picked off near Danville in my Porsche going fast enough that they towed the car and took me in. The legal bill to get that one reduced was big enough that I am now behaving better (at least for a while).

I was standing in my garage, sucking a brew,my car parked in the street, down the driveway in front of me. Along came 2 motorcycle cops, they went by, turned around, went back by, staring hard at the car, turned around again, flipped on the lites and sirens, stopping in front and behind the Cobra. I'm thinking "what the hell is this?" when they get off the bikes and start asking all the usual cobra questions. After about 20 minutes, they thanked me, paid compliments and rode off. The wife thought it was really funny......

There's a county cop that is the coach of my nephew's baseball team. Every now and then I take the Cobra to a game. He's always there with his badge - and says "you gotta take me out in that - I know all of the great roads - and you won't get a ticket!" At some point this summer - I'll take him up on that for sure!

Talking Downunder

A few years back at our Aussie Nationals held in West Wyalong I took what became known as Satans Toy for a spin before the days events commenced....780KG... 550+Hp..running VP104 race fuel...street slicks..2 matt glass body..8" perspex screen ...painted Matt blk with 20 spray cans the nite before,so I had taken the car for a spin through town only to be pulled up by the local copper, his questions were as follows;

1. "so this is Satans toy, hey??"
YES OFFICER
2."Do you know what speed you were doing?"
NO!!I DON'T HAVE A SPEEDO
3."The car is registered ??????"
AHHH YEAHHHSSSSS"....."BUT NOT TO ME"
4." Let's see what we have here-
NO mirrors of any kind,no speedo, a bit to low for my liking,i can see the road ,engine and diff from within the cockpit, AND THAT FUEL WHAT IS IT:!!!!!AND A TAD LOUD I COULD HEAR YOU FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF TOWN!! Now we give you guys a good run up here you be a good boy and be on your way just keep an eye on your tacho to gauge your speed.

Does getting pulled over by US Customs count?

I have just been informed that the container that my roller is in has been selected for "additional testing" by US Customs in LA.

They will not give any ETA on when they might clear it. They have just said that two of the three tests have been completed and they are currently in process on the third.

Normally, I wouldn't worry about it, but I have somebody in LA waiting to bring the roller back to Boise and on a really tight schedule.

Frustrating beyond belief.

Back in 1999 I drove my ERA to Reno and got pulled over three times on the one trip. In each case it was simply so they could look at the car. It started getting a little old.

This year I drove the GT40 up to the Bash and was being very careful to not speed.....when I came upon a pickup truck in the right lane I followed him for a while and then decided to pass him so I just eased on around him....sure enough there was a CHP sitting there.

She pulled me over and said I was going 81 in a 65...I asked her if I could get a break and she said yes - she would drop the speed down. I was hoping for a warning.

She then asked for insurance and registration - which I gave her but my insurance card was not the new one so it was out of date.

After she wrote the ticket she called me back to her car to sign the ticket and told me she was giving me a fixit ticket for failure to show proof of insurance.

I wasn't real pleased but continued to smile, assuming I was getting two tickets now, when I asked if I was eligible for traffic school she looked kind of puzzled and said that she didn't see the need as I was only getting a fixit ticket not a speeding ticket!

Cool!!!

Good story Pat,
The one time I got stopped in my Cobra I was at the rear of of a group of
cars on H-2 headed towards Schofield Barracks and was going 65 (in a 55)
at the most, when one of Hawaii's finest chased me down and pulled me
over. When I asked him why he stopped me he showed me his radar gun
which had 81 in it and said it was because I had a shiny car. Dick. All I can
figure is he had clocked someone earlier and never did a reset on the gun
and put the screws to me - no way was I going anywhere near that speed -
or he would have said something about loud pipes too.

Never been pulled over yet but twice I've (actually we -two Cobras- in both cases) gotten 'warnings' that consisted of the highway patrol hitting the rollers and giving a blast on the siren till we returned to a speed they considered more appropriate.

Yes. I was asking for it and deserved it. I was 25 over in a 40 and he took mercy upon me and gave me a 10 over and a warning, which I am grateful for. Now I travel much more smart. No more than 5 over in town, which is where I got the ticket.

I really did not get pulled over more of an acknologement.

I was out 1 saturaday trying to tune the Webers crusing around the area not far from the house. I had no hood, no insurance, no plate, no registration.

I came up to a 4 way stop with 2 cop cars on my right. I figured I couple wave the first cop to go but would the second one follow? As the first cop pulled of the 2nd cop waved me on to go. I suggested back to the cop for her to go. she then flip the lights on and blipped the siren and insisted that I go.

I decided to turn right (with the turn signal ) so she would not get a change to see no plate and to head in the opposite direction. She (cop) decided to make a U-Turn and run me down. I pulled over right away.

As she appoarched my car she began to talk to me about the car. As she was leaving she mentioned dont worry, if I wanted to pull you over it would not be for the missing hood, plate and probably no registration. She mentioned, I would have nailed you for the speeding you were doing in the back streets a few weeks back.

Happy a Nice Day
