PCV Valve For Calif BAR / SB-100 ?
Starting to plan the motor for my car ... have a question.
Is there a recent new requirement requiring a PCV system, for cars going through the SPCN / SB-100 process? I recall reading something to that effect ... does anyone know for sure ? Thanks. - Tim |
Dont know if they require it or not, you should have one anyway it will keep you from blowing gaskets or seals out.

With SPCN/SB100 you need nothing since you are exempt. I didn't have one when I received my SB100.
I agree though you should have one for proper motoring. Mike |

Yes I just went through it yesterday and soon I'll have my plates. On one valve cover you'll have your pcv valve plumbed to the intake manifold below the carb. On the other you'll have a closed breather plumbed to your air cleaner bottom or thereabouts. But first you'll have to get your brake and lights certificate then go to the CHP for your VIN. Going to the smog ref is last. That was my scenario anyway. Cliff |

Like everything with the SB100 process, your experience may vary slightly depending on the DMV office and BAR that you visit. My guess is that the BAR will be satisfied with a PCV valve alone, but 209 had a different experience at the BAR that he visited. |

You want a PCV valve anyway as it reduces crankcase acids and unburned fuel in the crankcase vent system.

I went to the BAR at Golden West College, CA. Because my Cert of Origin said 1965 Cobra and my 427 block had a 1965 casting no., the referee made me put the PCV/closed crankcase system on the engine. Seemed ludicrous, but I rolled over and complied (like I had a choice!). I was issued the SB100 sticker upon return. They don't do the smog check anymore. My experience, but a recent SB100 experience in So Cal. Finally finished mine a few months ago.

I thought all the SB100 stickers were issued for the year already, at least that is what two SoCal DMV's have told me. Steve |

Yes that's what I thought but as I was going through the hoops in May/June, they issued me 2009/462 and 10 days later received my proposed SB-100 number or whatever. Can't remember squat! I guess it was #462 out of 500. This year was a little special compared to others. Actually I read about the release of the last 40 numbers on this forum and voila, I got one. Cliff |
I have a "puke" tank and no PCV. When I went thru SB100, the ref said nothing about my "puke" tank or about a PCV, yet the SB-100 sticker says I have a PCV... Go figure!

My CA registration required a PCV and no other emission items. As stated above, I think you would benefit from a PCV. Mine goes from the rocker arm cover to the back of the carb.

Registered a mild 351 Windsor in Fresno early in January, this year. There was no requirement for PVC - the SB-100 exempts, period.

I went thorught this in May. Like some people have mentioned, you want a pcv anyway, so just put one on. I have one on my 351w. SB100 as the referee expalined it to me, allows you to be compliant with a new car, that was built to replicate a car from history. That being said, sb100, allows you to use 1965 smog standards, as that is the body style you are replicating. He also noticed that my engine was a 1969 vintage windsor, so I had the choice of 1965 or 1969 standards. The only emission device required for smog in 1965 was pcv. TAC (thermostatic air cleaners) and other stuff did not come into play until years later. Hope this helps. Andrei |
