jagrolet,
BINGO! Well thought out. If Don supplied the shocks and they are PRO's the part number will be stamped in the shock housing just above the lower shock mount. It should read -??- SM-600. Usually the spring is rated on the bottom of the spring, guessing 200 lbs +??. Somewhere around 11"s tall?

NOW, if you want a "fulldrop" SAFETY NET ( I have never seen the need for one, but you can use a cable wrapped around the axle tube with both ends of the cable attached to each other using a lead type 'compression' fitting. What you have done is simply made a full circle around the tube with the cables)!
Ramblin' again--Sorry!

I just pulled my passenger side shock off the car to confirm a few things.
I can't find any numbers on the spring, but it measures 11" with no load.
The only number I could find on the shock body was on the flat part where
the plunger rod goes in and that was "3 SR". I do have the 6" stroke. So
the shock can compress a full 2" and extend 4" with the mounts 14"
apart (normal ride height). How does this compare to yours? 6" and 5"? The shock fully compressed measures 12" mounting hole center to mounting hole center and fully extends to 18".

I had an interesting conversation with Jim Baily at Pro Shock today. I was referred to him by the tech department as the guy who specializes in the street rod applications of their product. I explained to him what I have been going through here as I stated in the original post. He said the SM600 series is a shock only, no threads on body, not a coil over. So that part number does not apply in my case. Maybe thats the shock for CR's using the non-coilover rear suspension.

Anyway the stroke on my shocks are 6" and they need to be 5". I have 14" center to center on the mounting bolts. 6" shocks are for 15" c-c and 5" are for 13.5" c-c. My shocks are too long. I bought these shocks from Pete at CRII in Feb. '07 and they shipped in May. So I guess it can be said that "they (CRII) shipped the wrong parts" for whatever reason. I still have to buy them again. Yes, you could say I'm more than a little disappointed.

My other option would be to extend the top shock mount upwards of 1". I will look into that as well. Any thoughts on that?

This won't happen for a few weeks but I will revisit this thread when it does.

John

JOHN, I'd like to know what the ellll was going on over their in the last year or so.??
Common on the pro shocks to raise at least the rear bolt an inch. ??
DV
Now you have me wanting to take some more serious measurements. Have to find what I will find?

John,
I don't think moving the hole will help. The springs are already too short for the shock. I think that you need to get the correct shock. I am going to have to get them also. Did they give you a part number for the 5" travel shock?

Terry,
I think the 2 1/2"x11" spring is the longest they have. They have shorter ones. I don't see why the bottom adjuster for the spring couldn't be moved up an inch to pick up the slack. The shock could only extend 3" and compress 3". It would just orient the plunger rod into the middle of the stroke, say 3/3 instead of being 2/4. Just because I'm a new expert on shocks doesn't mean I know diddly about the dynamics of how they are supposed to work.

To answer your question...the part number he gave me is ASB-SR5AB. That calls out the type of mounting hardware, 1/2" bolt holes through heim type joint and urethane bushing, 5" stroke. Pro Shock 770-995-6300 Jim Baily. East coast time zone.

Default Shocks

I'm in the process of building my car & have pics of both the 6" & 5" stroke
mounted on the frame. CR had my shocks on back order when they went out of business so I contacted Jim Bailey at Pro-Shocks & he went through the paperwork & found what Don was ordering. He was a ordering 6" stroke shock with a 11" 275" spring (this is for the rear, the front is fine) My part #may be different because I have the new adjustable shocks.
Initial set-up the top mount was moved down 2", spacers & gussets were
fabed-up & welded on. After a base ride height was set with the body on we (we meaning me & my neighbor Joe who has a lot of experience building custom cars) noticed that the rear end was too high with only about a 1" of threads below the adjuster ring. After removing the body, at this base height the shock was too far down in the stroke to be effective. After a convesation
with Jim Bailey at Pro-shock We agreed that the 5" stroke shock might work better. So with it mounted & some standing on the frame testing to simulate
body & fuel (Joe is 220#I'm 175#) We did the stand on test with both shocks & the 5" shock felt the most functional I think this a good direction for my situation. Again I have pictures if anyone interested.

My rear shocks are at 14" c-c also. Looks like I will be calling Pro Shocks. Thanks for the P/N John. My shocks however have the spherical bearings instead of the urethane bushings. I am sure Pro Shocks will figure out what I need.

Thanks, Terry

Terry,
BTW that part number is for the shock only. No spring. Jim said I could reuse the springs I have.

John,
If you don't mind? How much did they quote you on the shocks?
