Oil cooler cleaning?

Catastropic failure in engine whole block looks like swiss cheese , new engine on stand but I wonder if I can successfully clean out oil cooler ?
Oil was filtered before entering cooler but should i take the chance ? how good are filters these days? any advice would be welcomed ..WD
