Would love to extend my driving season

Kansas....Colder temps are on their way and I would love to find a soft/hard top for my CR. I actually started to make my own and still may continue however, the RIGHT top is preferred. Anybody have a lead on one? I've talked to Mr. Bruce and his tops are an option, however, not specific to the longer CR. Putting some feelers out...!!! Thanks all.

Kevin

Interesting - I'll chalk the comment up to my ignorance of forum decorum. I thought about finding my original post and "renewing" it but found it easier to make a new one (perhaps that was lazy but seemed to work great). I will say that the information provided was different and provided a new resource that was very helpful, so thanks.

No further replies necessary.

Naw, I believe DV was stating that he made a double post. Sometimes when you reply to a post it takes a while and if you hit submit again it comes out as a double post.

I am sure it was nothing on your end.

Wisconsin_Snake 09-19-2013 06:03 PM

I thought that Bill Emerson said that his tops would not fit as the dimensions are different (although from just pics the car bodies look almost identical).

Kevin let us know what you find out.

kevin.mchugh 09-19-2013 08:23 PM

I called and talked to emerson today asking if there tops would fit. He said they would but it would require some work if you just ordered the pieces and installed it yourself. The other option was to have his shop install it...but the labor isnt cheap of course. Thanks for the clarification on the dp....though t I screwed up.

I ordered the lemans top from mr. Bruce. Ill post some pix if anyone is interested once I get it sorted out.

The tonneau covers are approximately 50" long and 54" wide. The lift the dots use the same posts for top and tonneau. If this is similar to your cockpit opening and gets back to around the rear brace of the roll bar I'll bet the Robbins top would fit yours. They have some extra material on the front so you could move the whole top back a couple of inches and still have enough material to wrap/attach to the front split bows.

With a soft top, side curtains and heater I have driven these things in 27 deg weather. Bruces top will extend your season months, you'll make it work.

Double Venom 09-20-2013 07:29 AM

Well,
this is a first. I had no idea that you could make one of Bruce's top work on a CR's. I thought they were to short for a CR's body, I.E. not fitting from the windshield to the back shelf and certainly not big enough to clear the CR's doors and certainly not fit the side windows! Maybe Bruce will chime in here.

I think as far as Bill is talking, you do NOT have to modify anything but there are some pieces that have to be 'glassed' in place. the trick is to get them glassed in right! (The header panel for the top of the windshield frame. A thought here is to use a medium dry time epoxy glue made for fiberglass! (SEM) is what all the factory's use and any good part's - body store will carry it.) Mount the header after cut/grind to fit, put glue across the top of fiberglass header, drop the top in the exact place. screw down the back, then put weight-s around the top at the windshield. Give it 20 minutes dry time, depending on what grade of glue you used...There is your factory OEM CR's top!

Not tricky, just time consuming and of course attention to detail counts.

Bill, speak up I haven't put one of your tops on in 10 +/- years!

??
DV

PS Kevin, "LEMANS top??? And yup! DP='s Double Post, sorry for the confusion!!

kevin.mchugh 09-22-2013 06:54 AM

The lemans top extends over the rear deck lid requiring a remote gas filler cap. You can get them as one piece or with a hatch back option, the hatch backs are much harder to make weather tight. Bruce provides an extension (approx 8") for his tops to fit the CR. If you are near him, the best method is to deliver the car to him and he will ensure correct fit. In my case, I plan on using a solid body guy in town to assist me with final fit and finish (glassing) and then paint to match. Top is ordered and should arrive to me mid November or so. Bruce provides links to acquire the correct "tongue&groove" type rubber trim and most cost effective shippers. I believe I heard him right, he offers both glass and plexi options. Anyway, I will post pictures if others have interest. Thanks for the help!

Two problems with mounting my top to a deferent car. the CR is not as symmetric side to side as our car so one side is up higher and the flange over the back of the body would have to be cut and fit. windshield angel would have to be changed to fit the top . The header is made in the top and uses a single clamp in the sinter that pulls a cable that is attached to the windshield side pillars that bolt the windshield frame. The side windows and tee top swing up together and the door opens normally. The deck lid is removed from the car so the hatch lid would have to be fabricated to fit what ever car was used. When installed this top is water tite. and removable. I started with a Mr Bruce top. Should have stopped there. All the hinges are custom and have to be fabricated from stanless You cant bye them I tried. I have build hole cars faster than I can do this top. if you wont one on your car it would be in the 15 K range. Mr Bruce,s top is moor flexible in what it will fit. and a good bye.
